Camp is officially over. It finished strong... I will share when I can upload pictures. God continues to show me that there are better ways... simpler ways... to worship Him. Even in a hot tent with little media, everyone was singing for the Lord as if a fire was lit under them. Perhaps that is why the tent was so hot! :)
The most exciting news that I don't have a picture to go along with (because Julia wouldn't let me)so I can share, is that Julia woke up with a big tick on her stomach. I did not freak out but I also would not pull it out. We got dressed quickly and went out to show someone. They quickly took it off--- actually not a big deal. A tick encounter was one of my biggest fears about coming here-- I guess God had to show me there is nothing to fear afterall.
The weather has been hot... nothing a quick dip in the river can't solve. Nights are chilly... mosquitoes not as bad as I thought.
Life is extremely simple here. Maybe poor is a better word. Not sure. I'm leaning towards simple because in many, many ways the people seem richer than I do.
Shoes are mended or glued... meanwhile go barefoot.
Gum is a treat among adults... so savor it.
So is coffee creamer... who needs it.
There aren't fitted sheets.
So what if cats has fleas... people here don't buy cat food so why would they buy flea repellant.
Conversation takes the place of tv. So does washing the dishes by hand, tending to the chickens, shelling walnuts, and walking to the store.
When my head hits the pillow, it doesn't take me but a few minutes to fall asleep.
P.S. Feel free to ask questions.

No questions...just wanted to let you know I'm in Kiev with our daughter for the next week. We fly out Sunday so if you're back by then feel free to call! +380 50 827 71 45 I would LOVE to meet you ;)
Wow,so interesting. How neat for your children to experience.
Just FYI - pulling ticks off of us and the kids is a daily thing here where I live...pull em off the dog too. Really no big deal.... I am sure I will get lots of comments about that..but something I have always done. :)
I have a question....So, when are you moving your family there? :)
You are in the Odessa area? If you go north up the coast, you'll eventually reach Ochakiv (Ocahkov). That is where is the orphanage from which I adopted my son. They have nice beaches there. Ticks may still be bad. Keep a watch on the area. Ask someone local, like an old grandma, what kinds of problems there could be.
I may have missed this somewhere, but you're cooking your own meals, right? Did you bring food from home or get things there?
Julia sorry about your tick that you got !!! Hey mom how is the food there???? i miss you love Rachel
Hi! You are so wonderful a simpler life is a beautiful life. In American we have so much and other countries have so little. When I think of my friends from the church who grew up on the collective farms and how religion was something that was only discussed behind locked barn door in the wee hours of the night I thank God that this country has so much to offer its people and religion can be practiced freely. God bless America Pat
Love the simple life.... but would want flea repellant. LOL
I don't think people necessarily see themselves as poor, but may see us as wasteful. They may have some wisdom there. How much further could our $$ go, if we were frugal and satisfied?
May the Lord continue to bless your time! I'm sure you will bring back precious memories.
Our friends leave Tuesday for Hungary to teach at a church family camp. They will be in tents just like you, for about days. I can't wait to hear back from them. I know it is going to be amazing.
Ticks do carry severe diseases, I just hope Julia does not end up with something.
Just because whoever pulled the tick off said it was no big deal does not mean that all is in the clear.
When you get home I would be taking her to a Doctor to see if they can run any test to see if anything can be detected even if she is not having symptoms.
Sorry to be the party pooper but this is really scary.
Susan
Ticks are nasty, but like someone else said, where we live, they're just a part of life. Our dogs get them occasionally despite preventative and we get them every now and then. With Lyme disease, ticks need to be on the person for 36+ hrs to transmit the disease.
have I missed something? Do we know who you are bringing into your family? can you tell us anything about the child you're adopting? Or if you have and I totally missed it, where's the post so I can read? :)
Take care, have fun, and enjoy your experiences. May they all be positive! :)

follow-up with Susan - Keep an eye on the bite area. Usually there is nothing to worry about, but watch it and make a note of unusual redness etc. I've had to deal with too many of those nasty little bugs :p Take care, hugs and much love!
I have to chuckle at your comment, "with little media" - I went to my first church service with ANY media - well apart from a piano or organ - this year. I was astounded that church could be so much like a performance. I didn't dislike it; it was just startling - less startling than my visit to a traditional "Friends" church - with no MUSIC even.
And, being crowded - that is great or the Spirit! And being without so much tv/computer - better for life.
+1 on what Kelly said. You doing missionary work or is that just a cover up for the real reason for going-to scout out places to move the family? How does Sasha fit into all this? You going to have him there for one of the girls or maybe bring him back? Don't keep us in suspense.
@ Susan: I wouldn't be too worried about Julia. Remember, they are doing Gods work and He would never let something like a tick slow them down.
The tick didn't even leave a mark. Julia is fine! Thanks for the concern.
Belatedly wanted to make clear that the Susan posting above about the tick bite isn't me, "Susan in Ky". I sometimes post cmments here and elsewhere, mainly on the RR forum. Lots of Susans out there!
Hope all is going well - it sounds as if you all are thoroughly enjoying your experiences (and that the tick bite hasn't led to unpleasant consequences).
Safe travels...
