"How come the past tense for hold is held but the past tense for fold is folded?
How come I didn't holded the ball?
Why couldn't I felded the towels yesterday?
The English language is dumb."
P.S. Today I broke down crying in the dentist's office. For real. As he began to tell me how damaged my teeth are from grinding and that I have a $1000 in medical treatment that needs to be done, how could I not?
Please pray for me-- next week I am having three plus hours of work done. And tonight I am wearing my nightguard.
No offense, but I hate dentists.

I have a ridiculious fear of dentists, I have no idea why. But I'll bet if I went, I too would be boo hooing in the chair. Praying for you my friend!
Neither is spelling nor pronounciation logical.... My daughter started learning English this year. and she really struggles. She asks me all the time questions like "but that word that is spelled the same way is pronounced like this, why isn't this one too?" Yes why? I keep telling her to wait until she gets older and can start with easy logical languages like French and Russian :-)
Oh Christine, I am so sorry. I will be praying for you as you go through the treatment.
Oh! I know...I know the answer to this one! The English language is made up of words from many different languages. So, it depends where a word originated as to how it is conjugated. Sometimes, dictionaries give word origins, and that is one way spelling bee participnats study. They know how certain languages change verb tenses and then guess that a certain word originating in a certain language should be spelled a certain way.
Otherwise, yea, wear the mouth guard. I'll pray for you and your mouth. Puts a whole new twist on the phrase put your money where your mouth is, huh?
English is my fourth language and it seems more rules have an exception than actually follow the rule.It it definitely the most difficult to learn correctly by far. BTW, I am a teeth grinder myself and hate to go to the dentist for him only to tell me once again to use my teeth guard !
I don't like dentists either. . .I need an implant that I keep putting off--about $4500 charge for that thing! You're in my prayers sweetie. And hang in there. It could definitely be worse!!! (Your kids are healthy and beautiful so you get bonus points for that!)
well the mouth guards ARE to protect teeth. I got one and proudly wear it every night to protect my teeth..I can't afford the medical bills so the mouth guard will prevent that..if it doesn't fit properly or your teeth hurt in the morning you may want to get it adjusted. my dentist does this for free..as many times as needed. I actually LOVE going to the dentist, because I know I am doing everything I can to keep MY own teeth. It also helps to have an amazing dentist.
I don't care for dentists either!
I have to wear a mouth guard all the time - except to eat of course - so be thankful you only have to wear it at night:-) My daughter has to wear one at night for grinding and she was wearing it sporatically and the dentist could tell. I am so used to wearing it that it feels strange not to have it in my mouth. It only takes 3 weeks to change something, so if you wear it every night for 3 weeks it would be automatic for you. In the mornings when you take it out put it near your toothbrush so when you brush before you go to bed, there it will be! It is so worth it when you consider $1000 for fix your teeth. I really like my dentist a lot - very gentle and kind. Makes a huge difference.

Dentists are the worse for over charging. I hate it. Praying for you. I suppose I should wear my guard..but ughh i can't breath with it in my mouth.
..
I paid over 5,000 just for a bridge...i think our dentist is making a killing off of our family.
What's a dentist?
I had the same thing (crown) in December. I wear my night guard now. My crown was 1200. I feel for you! It wasn't nearly as bad as my imagination made it out to be beforehand. I cracked my tooth grinding also. People do it all the time, whether they have 6 kids (me! :)) or 15. Give yourself some grace.
Hi! Good luck at the dentist I know a $1000 is a lot of money with the expense of a pending adoption.Blessings pat
I am right there with you on your feelings for the dentist! I too need some work done, and I keep putting it off :(
Thinking of you
Mouth guards are ridiculous, but I wear mine every nite. I'm lucky- the one I use is my orthodontic retainer, from when I got my braces off a 4 years ago. I kid you not- I had ground my teeth so that my bottom teeth hit the roof of my mouth. Jaw problems were starting to develop. I wore braces- the old metal kind for almost 2 years to get the teeth pulled back. Now I wear that nite guard each nite. If I skip a nite or 2, I can feel the difference when I put it on the next time- grinding is so powerful I can hardly get the retainer on!! Thank goodness for the thin hard plastic kind of retainer- like the Invisilign type of braces. I will cry if this thing ever breaks!!
Caleb is a very very smart boy!! For me who always learn English in language schools and have never been an English speaking country it's especially a good feeling that he can see the difficulties of his own mother tongue.
But I disagree, the English language isn't dumb:)I like it.
Caleb might be interested in reading this article from Wikipedia on ablaut, which is the system of vowel variation that gives us irregular past tense forms like "sung" instead of "singed" for the strong verbs.

Language is so fascinating! Often, people disparage English rules as arbitrary or senseless, when really, there are historicolinguistic reasons why a lot of the "weird" things about English exist.

Ugh! Hate dentists and we don't have dental coverage - gets ridiculously expensive! Hope it goes well next week. My dentist is always on me about grinding and I tell him I don't think I grind I think it's clenching. I haven't broken down and bought a night guard yet although he is pretty persistent.
