Who Knew

Who knew this big hand clapper that lights up when the hands slap together could provide so much fun for one little seven year old boy? I never would have thunk it-- but it has.

For the last few days, Jonny has been begging me to play the "Clapper" game. It goes a little something like this. I make up questions like, What letter comes before X?, or If you had $1.50 and bought some candy for $.40 how much would you have left over?, or How do you spell Wednesday?, and when the child answers it right Jonny uses the clapper to clap really loud for the person along with everyone else clapping. Don't ask me why-- but the game is a big hit with him and most of the other kids too. So tonight I finally set aside some time and played with him--- and "G" and later Sveta joined us. It was "G"s first time and the three of us had a blast playing for the first 15 minutes. The two of them especially loved when I came up with questions like-- If you saw Adam make 24 tacos, and then an elephant stomped up the stairs to hide in my closet, then how doughnuts did we eat on Wednesday?

Of course we ended our game with each of us doing our own little "Clapper" dance. At first "G" was shy but after she saw all of us do it-- yes including me-- she got up and did her very own "Clapper"dance.

Now Sveta hopes the tooth fairy brings her her very own Big Hand Clapper tonight!

So what do you do with your kids for fun?

Our favorite game is called "Kisses" which is usually played before bedtime. My husband and I set the alarm for five or ten minutes and then chase the boys around the house. When we catch one, we smother him with kisses and then let him go and it starts all over again. Lately, the game has evolved to include pillows . . . the boys whack us with pillows to escape the horde of kisses. :)

I love your family!

We have fun pulling each other around in laundry baskets with ropes. And we wear clothes that are way too big for us and stuff them with pillows so we look really large.

One of our games is Mommy Ask Us Questions...if I have a bag of treats, they will beg me to ask them questions....they get a treat if they answer right. I have used this game to restore order when I have had other families here to babysit, in addition to all of my kids. They aren't allowed to tell the answer to another child's question, and they have to wait their turn to get a question. It is great fun, and makes me realize how much I don't know when I am thinking up the questions....

Love silly games like that one- we do something similar. Daddy reading in silly voices with funny accents, dancing, playing silly songs on the utube - like brown girl in the ring, or older (mom & dad) songs.... :)

What do we do for fun? That's a tough one. We have a 21 year old who likes to shop and text and hang out with her boyfriend, a soon to be 20 year old who doesn't like to play with the 10 year old, a 13 year old who is rather moody and only sometimes likes to do things with others, and a 10 year old who gets rather frustrated when he doesn't win and when he doesn't get his way and then annoys most everyone else until they quit playing with him. But, lately, some of them play Wii together, for a while.

We play "Family Rotational Fun." We each write down, on a slip of paper, one to four activities for everyone to do together. Sometimes there are rules like: no more than 15 minutes, at least one has to be an active game, all inside, all outside, whatever is appropriate for the day/weather/moods. It's always no electronics. The slips of paper get folded and put in a hat, then we take turns pulling them out and doing them.

Activities include things like playing a board or card game, working on a puzzle, reading a book together, taking the dog for a walk, making something in the kitchen together, drawing progressive pictures (each adding stuff in turn), playing hide and seek, hallway bowling - limited only by our imaginations.

That is adorable! I'd never thought of playing a game like that with one of those! Creative!
