Julia and Annalyn had their first day of online classes. They were excited to see how much it resembled a regular classroom but they quickly got bored as the teacher explained things over and over and over to the kids who didn't get it.
Annalyn and Julia tend to get finished with their schoolwork rather quickly and are able to help me out-- which is a big help! Here they are reading through a science project I am going to be doing with Sveta, Anastasia, and Jonny.
Speaking of Sveta, Anastasia, and Jonny-- they are all at about the same level. They work together as a group when we use math manipulatives and do Wordly Wise which is a fun vocabulary program. Often times I read the same stories to them and I try to include Sveta and Anastasia in as much science related things as I can without it being over their head.
The other day we read Dragon Goes Shopping. For a fun activity, I had them draw a shopping cart and fill it up with food that they clipped from grocery ads. I told them that they had to do a better job at balancing out their food groups so that everything was not junk food like in Dragon's cart.
I think they did a fine job. I told them that one day they would be great shoppers!
Did I mention we cook at home a lot? Julia is our "Queen of Desserts!" I asked her to make this recipe .
I think it looks absolutely gorgeous and normally it is wonderfully delicious but I think that we made too much filling and so the ratio of crust to filling was a little off-- which tells me do not triple the recipe next time! They remind me of bear claws.
P.S. I know that I need to update my header and side bar-- but I can sure use some help. I invision a picture header with random rotating pictures that change every few seconds. Anyone know how to do that? Also, I am running out of space on this blog-- has anyone else experienced that? Can I go and delete previous years to free up space or do I have to think abot starting a new one?

Looks like you're on a roll with the homeschooling! :)
As for the bloggy stuff. I would be happy to help you make a header, but I am not sure how to get them to rotate. I know Brent Riggs does though, so if you visit his site, perhaps there is a tutorial? http://www.riggsfamilyblog.com/
Re running out of space on Blogger, my blog is self hosted through Wordpress, so I'm not sure how to help here but would you consider buying your own domain? That way you could have a lot more space without having to delete anything! :)
Your post made me smile! :) Its wonderful to see kids enjoying learning and honestly I have been tossing the idea of homeschooling here since September but I just don't know, with Oksana our only child thats in school I think she needs the socialization from being in the class room setting. Its a toss up?!?! I sure do love the cut out pictures that the kids did on the food groups, very creative. I think you are doing a fantastic job!
If it were me, I would start up a new blog and keep this one intact, maybe one day one of your kids who haven't been with you very long yet will want to read all of it? Who knows, just like you have The Ukraine Train about your journey to Dennis, that he will probably read one day, this could be for everyone. Just a thought. :)

I concur, you could delete, but you have shared alot of useful information, as well as family history here, and it'd be better to keep it intact. Alot of bloggers just add a number and start new such as www.smilesandtrials2.blogspot.com then usually make the last post here a link to the new one.
I have no clue on the slideshow for the header.
I love watching your journey into homeschooling. It really is an awesome tool for attachment, for training, and for instruction. Go Reeds!
You can delete your old blogposts to make space for new ones. I do that every 3 months.
Good luck!

I hope you could find the way of keeping previous years. I often read your old posts. For us who are hoping to become adoptive parents old posts mean a lot especially posts where you deal with certain problems with kids and stuff like that.

Please don't delete the posts :(
This is a wonderfull story...
I loved homeschooling, and as a teacher I felt confident because I was aware from the inside out, how really imperfect even "professional" schooling is.
You have enough for a great one-room school! The school I was thinking of sending Anastasia to doesn't have as many students as you do; that makes me laugh.
I went back and started deleted some of the posts that weren't really that important. You can tell it to delete the photos from picasa too so you don't have to buy more storage space.
I like the idea of you starting a new blog more than deleting posts. But if you choose to delete post, another alternative that I have read of other bloggers doing is making a book of previous years of blogging that way you have a record of them and it would allow your children to look back on your blog posts at some point.
i know it's a stretch, but i'll suggest this anyway simply because i do NOT want to see ANY of this blog erased! there's too much "God work" in here that inspires me & i know others as well, and i'd hate to see that lost not only to us but others who God will lead here in the future.
perhaps, since i know money with all these kids is tight, you could put some sort of paypal button on your blog so readers who feel led to can donate towards getting your own domain (and therefore more space)? it shouldn't be THAT expensive so i bet you could raise it very quickly without even trying.
also, off topic, but i've been wanting to ask: will you be doing a post all about Galina sometime soon? like with Rachel & Annalyn, with their story of how they came to you, where they're from, how you & your family are feeling, how attachment is going, that sort of thing? we still don't really know much about this new daughter of yours! :-)
You can invest $5/year in Picasa to get more picture space.
I could help :-) Here's my design site.. http://www.dirtandlacedesigns.com
As far as more space, I recently had to purchase more for my blog. I'm not sure if there is another option besides deleting posts or starting a new one.
So glad you are enjoying homeschooling! It's nice that it is a great experience for the kids AND for mom!
I just paid the $5 fee to get another 20GB of storage. Easier than trying to redirect traffic to a new blog, and better than erasing older posts!
I'm so glad you are enjoying homeschooling! It is so much fun to have all of the kids learning similar things, and doing things together. I think it helps to build the family up, everyone learning and working together.
How in the heck do you know how much space you have left? I never even knew blogger limited the amount of space on blogs.
I'm no expert, but I think it's your pictures that are using the space. When you post pictures through Blogger, they are automatically hosted through Picasa Web (I think) and they have a limit of 1G free space. If you host your pictures somewhere else, (Flickr, Photobucket, etc.) it wouldn't add to your space usage on Blogger. Also, make sure your pictures are sized appropriately for web viewing. Overly large images use up space quicker.

Hey Christine, While your on a roll and enjoying it so much, I found a really neat girls devotional....
We started it today, and I plan to read it orally to the girls each morning over the next month. The age setting is Jr. High High School.
It is called The Divine Dance by Shannon Kubiak Primicerio.
Would you be my teacher? :) sounds like you are having a great time with Homeschooling. The dessert looked yummy!
I have a question and you totally don't have to answer it if you don't want to. I work with special needs and ELL students so I was curious... Does Anastasia have learning differences or her skills at a lower level because of the education she received in Ukraine or is because she is still learning English? Do you expect her to catch up with her age mate siblings? I also have a great link for you since you are now an ESL teacher http://www.eslprintables.com/
Stephanie how much do you charge? Could you actually help me to have a continually changing header picture without anyone having to click anything? That would be awesome!
Amy, I think Anastasia has a little of all three going on that you mentioned. I hope that she will catch up, but if not that is okay too. Thanks for the link. :)
The kringles look great! Can you really have too much filling, or frosting/glaze?? I don't think so :-)
I checked the recipe and will be making it soon.
Julia is a good little baker!
So glad you are enjoying home schooling. Looks like a great day! When I taught third grade I used to love using store circulars in teaching math. You can have them create a shopping list and then use math to figure out how much each item would cost if you bought 1,2,3 (older kids can multiply) then get a grand total. You can also discuss decimals as they apply to money. Give them a set budget and see if they can stay on budget, etc... so many things to do with a free store circular with weekly specials.
I paid the 5 dollars and it is well worth it. That way you don't have to delete posts.
Here is a link to make rotating blog headers...

Hi!I used unit studies when homeschooling several different children who were on several diferent educational levels for some subjects. I also bought several Amish cookbooks and my children learned a lot of lessons that were used in home economic classes.Their math skills improved especially with fractions. Good luck, Pat
