All About Life

Top Ramen remains a big hit around here-- and of course they like it raw. Amazing how families mesh over time-- I am beginning to like it myself. Since I don't let them eat it all the time, I have started experimenting with ways to make it even yummier when they do. We tried toasting it in the oven with a little oil and salt and then we doused it in hot pepper sauce.

It wasn't that bad!

Here are more of Sveta and Galina's works of art!

Julia and Anastasia-- the bandanna sisters!

I began a plant seed science project with Sveta, Anastasia, and Jonny. They have loved watering and learning about their plants.

The lesson included learning how seeds are dispersed. They all said, "Ew, gross," when they learned that some fruits such as apples are eaten by animals and dispersed later when the animal goes poop and the seeds are in it.

Ever since we got the trampoline, the kids have been eating like crazy! It really works up their appetites! In order to help keep food costs down, I try to limit the amount of packaged foods I buy. Instead we try new recipes like these granola bars. They were pretty yummy!

Our plates finally came in! They turned out great!

P.S. You will never ever guess what is in my shirt. I am not even sure I should be sharing this with you because you might think I am totally weird. Our Cousin came for a visit and taught us how to better care for our bearded dragon Bobble. She said that he should have protein in his diet and gave us a live supply of crickets... and a pinkie. Ugh. Why did she have to bring the pinkie? Well, we have tried and tried to feed Bobble the live crickets and the pinkie-- but we think our dragon is a vegetarian. So that leaves us with the pinkie, a tiny baby mouse whose eyes are still shut and you can see its little heart beating. I could have gotten over the dragon eating it, but she never mentioned what we are supposed to do with it if the dragon doesn't eat it. And it is just so cute-- and the kids love it. And it drank some milk with a dropper. So for now, I am the Momma and I am keeping it warm in my bra. Please tell me I am crazy.

Awww I'm glad you couldn't let the beardie eat the little mouse. Is it a mouse or a rat? You know me, I own 12 rats. :-p

Hi Christine

I remember pics of your bearded dragon from before. Love the name Bobble, btw.

But you are not far from the truth -- while bearded dragons do eat both live and vegetable foods they actually do eat more fruits and veggies than meats - things like cale and apples and romaine lettuce for example.

Love the plates too! You have a wonderful family.

Christine,

If there was ever ANY doubt, you are a very good Mom! (Just ask the mouse).

I meant ODD in a GOOD way, of course ;)

I love the plates. Where did you get them? My kiddos would love to make one.
I will say yuck about the rat. I am not a fan of rats. They carry so many diseases. I would have had to find a pet store to take him.

LOL - ewww I really don't like mice - even cute little baby ones.
Lovely to read your update. I really like the plates. I'd love to find somewhere over here that does that kind of thing - it would be such a fun project!
Hope you have a wonderful weekend
Renata:)

Awwww! I have a soft spot for 'vermin' as my mother always said. I love rodents to no end, and I'd probably have it tucked safe and warm in my bra, too!

I hope your mousie makes it. We have been foster parents to several "non-human" babies over the
years and my advice is to feed it canned kittens milk (you can even buy it at Wal-Mart) and use a warm wet cotton ball to rub its underside every few hours(they can't pee on their own without stimulation).Good Luck, you crazy lady:)

Talk about mothering instincts! I'm just laughing out loud at the thought of a baby mouse in your bra :-) Baby mice are really cute though.

Christine, I liked you alot before, now I love you! You are not crazy, you are a nurturer. That is what I told myself as I spent four or five days last summer feeding and coaxing the two newborn mice that our mean kitty left as orphans...they died, but I told the kids they had lived a good life, short as it was...and call me crazy too, but I cried my eyes out when we had to bury them.

That's now how we get our apple trees. ;)

(Did you see Bethany's last post?)

Oh, and my mom (as a teenager) had a pet rat named Shawny. When she rode her bike around town, she'd set him atop her head underneath her hat. Trust me, you've got a long ways to go before I think you're weird.

Years ago I had a friend whose snake didn't eat it's pinkie. I took it home with me and got up around the clock to feed it kitten formula with a dropper. It was so tiny and ended up aspirating and dying after a few days. I don't think you are crazy at all! Good luck!

As a kid, I used to rescue mice that the cats had caught. They never lived, of course, but my sisters and I tried very hard. My mother used to tell us that was WHY we had cats, to keep the mice out of the house, ha!

Anastasia really is an artistic girl, that plate is AWESOME! And you can tell her I said so.

We are also doing planting experiments right now and some gardening in school. My youngest keeps checking the garden to make sure there are no tomatoes growing, since he hates them. He told me the other day, "That's not for eating. We don't eat PLANTS!"

As long as you don't latch Pinkie on for milk, I think you're good.

Hi! I think having Pinkie has been a blessing for your family and definitely for Pinkie. This whole experience with Pinkie really proves that your family is very caring. And your family truly does live what you believe. Through out the Bible there are tales of people who took care of God's smallest creatures .The people who took the time to care for God's most tiniest creatures were really blessed.Even the smallest creature has a place in God's kingdom.May God continue to bless all the little creatures in your family, Pat
