Today felt different. It felt a little more settled than any other day here so far. I enjoyed my cup of coffee as I graded Jonny's spelling, I got excited when the head psychologist offered services for Dennis that I didn't even have to fight for-- that exceeded my expectations, and I marveled at how many wonderful books we checked out at the library. Yes, today was different.
It would be a lie to say that our life here has been easy getting used to because it hasn't. Our mornings start earlier as I pull out of the garage a little after 7 am to get Adam and Caleb to the highschool a good fifteen minutes away. As I cross the busy freeway, I am in awe at the beautiful mountains and gorgeous views before me. We are not in Oz anymore. The time change brought with it a need to remember to close the windows before I go to bed for the night. I don't remember it being so cold up North.
I hurry home to be with my homeschoolers and get Alex off to school. I am always pleasantly surprised to see that everything I had assigned them before I left was already done. As they continue with their lessons, I sneak upstairs to begin a load of laundry. Did I mention how much I love my washer and dryer? They are absolutely fabulous, everything about them-- they have made washing clothes so not a chore anymore.
Anna is enjoying her online math called Teaching Textbooks, but not as much as I am. What a wonderful way to learn math! All three homeschoolers are learning to type and as we take the time to try out various online resources, I realize that their is so much out there for our kids to do-- all for free-- and all educational in some way! Even my other kids are able to use them when they get home.
I love the flexibility that homeschooling affords me, yet I also love the accountability that I get from the kids' teacher. She has been a wonderful resource, a big encouragement, and I am actually considering homeschooling more of the kids beginning after Christmas break. The other day we walked over a mile to the park and back, and today the kids played basketball. I read to them everyday, they take verbal tests and written tests to reinforce what they have learned, we do art together, make lunch together, and the best part is that we have grown closer.
In return, I have given up my alone time but in all honesty I was not using that time wisely anyways. I was afraid that I would miss my freedom, but instead I realized how much I was missing out on. The road to homeschooling has not been an easy one, but it is one that I am so very glad that I chose to go down.
As three o'clock approaches, I set off once more to pick up the kids from school. Even though it feels like a rat race to pick up my junior highers, I do enjoy the drive home as I hear about their day. Now that Caleb has made the basketball team, I drive back out in the evening to pick him up-- no more luxury of having friends drop him off. But even that drive home is enjoyable as I get some one on one time with him.
Dennis has began speech twice a week, and afterwards we will make a stop at the library. Since we don't have cable television anymore, we appreciate all the movies that can also be checked out. As a homeschooling Mom I am excited at the thought of coordinating a book that the kids first read with the movie afterwards. How cool is that?
Everyday I try to hang up a few more pictures, unpack one more box, go through one more pile, and everyday it is beginning to feel more and more like home. Now all I have to do is have someone over for coffee.
That would be nice.
P.S. Adam got his driver's ed certificate. Soon he will be driving!

Glad you are finally settling in slowly. I've moved so many times, I know how that is. And I love watching a movie that was originally a book I read. Have they read Charlotte's Web? I love that book and the movie was really cute. Congrats to Adam on his drivers ed! My brother just got his drivers license today!
Christine,
Just wondering if there was a specific reason why your children don't ride the bus to school (apart from sports practice making that difficult)?
I´d love to come for coffee... If I could (and was invited of course!): )
Certainly be a pricey coffee!
I am so glad you are finding homeschooling so right for your kids...Awesome!
Doesn't your town have school buses for the kids?
Glad to hear that such good services are being provided.
I do have a question for you. You are so busy with the family and running the roads getting things done. How do you fit in personal time with the Lord? God has been getting me up even earlier to spend time with him in the mornings.
It sounds like everything is falling in to place nicely.
Our day starts at 5:30 as the high school bus comes at 6:10! They reuse the buses so the hs kids get to school an hour early but since Adam goes to a different school now, he has to catch the transfer bus. That hour to just hang out was not good for him!
Sounds like you are making your routine. Glad to hear you are able to enjoy your time with your homeschoolers. It is well worth the sacrifice.
So glad you are enjoying the journey!
I am so glad to hear you are all settling in and homeschooling is going well. Here's to many more peaceful days ahead with friends included for coffee.
I'm so glad to hear that your home schooling is going so great, I hope and pray that you will enjoy and savor each day, before you know it your kids will be moving out and getting married.
I have a random question to ask you, I wonder how to change the picture that shows up on your blogfrog recent visitors? I would like to put our latest family pic up there.

Netflix has some really excellent educational titles, too. I mean, not just movies but educational videos.
Sounds like you're adjusting to things.
This is good.
Wish I could come and have coffee with you. But, I guess I will have to settle with reading along with your new adventures while sipping coffee here in Reedley. Miss you all. Hugs
Isn't the time with your kiddos so precious?? I can't imagine sending them off daily for schooling somewhere else. As my oldest is fast approaching adulthood it is even more special that I get to be with them. Crazy energy and all!! :)
I LOVE that you are liking it too!!! Yea!!!
Way to go mom!!!!
Hi Your house is becoming your new home You are well on your journey. You are more relaxed and calmer.God is showing you the way. Good luck and many Blessings,Pat
Congratulations! I am so happy for you that all is going well. :)
I love the book movie idea. We do that over here too. Our library had a program called, "Don't judge a book by its movie". :)
When our son was at home, because of his learning problems, we would watch the movie first so he had an idea of what he was reading.... watching the movie first helped him to picture in his mind what was going on in the book.
We have also used "Hank the Cowdog" books and CD's in the very same way.
If you haven't discovered Hank yet, I'm sure your local library has both book and CD. They are a lot of fun, and for some reason, really encourage reluctant readers to love to read. :)
I just want you to know that I love reading your blog and really look forward to new entries.
Our lives and beliefs are so different - I'm 22 years old with no children, and I'm not a Christian - but I find your blog so pleasant and refreshing.
I'm glad that you and your family are beginning to settle in at your awesome new home. If I didn't live on the other side of the country, I'd love to have a cup of coffee with you! Hopefully you'll find someone a bit closer soon enough.
Best wishes to you and your whole family,

I would love and treasure a cup of coffee with you! it would be a real gift! We've moved so many times, some were unsettling and I had to step back and say to myself, "home is where my family is". . . .our location, or our house, does not make a home, we do! Blessings on your family my friend.
Be easy on your transition, it will take time! Enjoy each cup of coffee as the work will always be there!!!
I will pray for your son's choices. I have one of those too right now!
What washer and dryer did you end up getting?
That's great that you have been enjoying the time with the kids! There are days when it's hard still, but I find that I just love being with my boys and watching them learn so much it's worth it. :)
Something else you might be interested in, we just got a book called Science in Seconds for Kids and it is an AWESOME book with stuff that kids of all ages can enjoy and learn from.
