The Road to Homeschool part 3

Well I just got back from faxing over the last of the documents needed to enroll Rachel, Jonathan, and Alex into the homeschool charter. I feel like a weight has been lifted-- its done-- I am really doing this. The teacher and I just got off the phone--- curriculum is picked out! I am very excited to get started--- I hope my kids enjoy it too. At this point I am not sure what kinds of extra services will be provided to Alex like with speech therapy and occupational therapy. I feel like there might be a trade off--- more individualized learning at his pace in his preferred setting with less "special services".

I wonder what that will look like?

Don't worry, trust God. He created our kids. He knows the plans He has for them. He knows the purposes for which He created them. So He knows best what their home school should look like & include. The most important curriculum: love, Biblical world-view, The Solid Rock foundation (which you've already been building on), faith, etc. You get the point. Trust God, He will work it all out.

Osiyyah (my brother with DS) is homeschooled and we've always done all of his therapy at home. There are therapy centers that you can go to outside of the school setting, which you probably know. As it is for us now, Osiyyah sees an ST once a month. He could see her more often, but since I'm his main ST, it's about all we need...to see her once a month. So, maybe you could look into various therapy centers that your insurance would cover? Just a thought :).

Christine, I don't remember California laws regarding therapy, but in Texas, home schoolers qualify to have therapy, or special services at the public school in your location regardless of being enrolled.

Speech, physical, occupational therapies can be had at the school, paid for by your tax dollars. I would look into that. :)

How exciting. Regarding services, I know in our school district, Daniel received speech therapy services. It doesn't matter if we're homeschooling, if we live in the district, we get the services.

Christine, just joining in with the others about A's services. Your district is mandated to provide the services stated in his IEP. (We live in Ca too.) You can call your new school and ask for the number of the person in charge of special ed. and s/he can help, and if they are not cooperative you have the right as a parent to demand an IEP meeting at any time. Just keep a copy of his current IEP handy.

Wow! You do know how to accomplish things! I'm curious - how does it work to homeschool thru a charter? You've probably explained - but is it homeschool totally, or is some of it at the charter school? You have a teacher working along side you? I know you pick curriculum with them, and get books thru the school, right? Sounds like it'll be great!
