Leave your Shoes at the Door Please

It looks like the construction is almost done! Yeah! You can see the progress here. Now we are just waiting for painting, the stair rail, and the carpet! John has also been busy putting together shoe bins for our entry way. We are hoping to become a "no shoes in the house" family and we needed a place for all the kids to store them near the front door when they first walk in.

Now I am off to the pumpkin patch with my little pumpkin!

Your post made me laugh! We had the same thing growing up! We had shoe racks at the door and a lovely little sign welcoming guests into our home but asking them to leave their shoes in the racks. My parents even had guest slippers for anyone who didn't want to be barefoot. My parents preserved their beautiful off white carpets for 15 years and oddly enough....now that we are adults, my sister and I don't allow shoes in our houses either. I already see our kids carrying on that tradition. :)

Awww...! That's so sweet, that you think that with 14 kids, you have a chance of being a "no shoes in the house" kind of family. We have a saying around our house, "hope springs eternal!" and another one, "I can dream, can't I?"

It will be so worth the wait when it's all done.

I hope the shoe bins are HUGE! Even with our small/big family of six kids, we find that each kid leaves more than one pair at the door! It usually looks like the shoe department of the Goodwill blew up in the foyer. :) So happy that your nest is getting done, it is always such a good feeling for a Mommy.

In Canada no one ever wears shoes in the house. They are always removed at the door. It's like this at every house I go to.

Looking good...
We are also a no shoes allowed in the house family. It literally makes me cringe when a guest walks into my house with shoes on. I dont correct guests, but ewwwwww...

Sounds like exciting times! We are also a no shoes family and it does make a lot of things easier. We started it because of our childrens' allergies. Not bringing allergens into the house is important. It's also been nice not to have to redo our wood floors. They were last done 10 years ago!
However, on the flip side, we have had some people come to our house that do not want to take their shoes off. The funny thing is, they think we are rude to ask them to take them off.
We've let a few people keep them on and all it takes is one person wearing shoes to undo all the work you've done.
It took us weeks to clean the sand off the floors.
We stand firm with our no shoes rule but at times it can be difficult. It really is an all or none thing.
One thing we found for workmen and others who must keep shoes on is these small booties that go over shoes. You may wish to get some of these.
We keep our shoes under a small bench by the front door.

We are a no shoes household as well. Growing up in other countries this has always been the norm for me anyway. I recently read that 60% of the dirt in our homes comes in on shoes. LOL. Not sure if that is true because I still spend a lot of time cleaning!
In our house the kids keep one or two pairs of their shoes in the baskets by the door and any others (soccer shoes, extra sneakers etc) stay in baskets under their beds. Otherwise I agree with the person who posted above...it can be near impossible to keep things tidy by the front door - teenagers' shoes are HUGE!
I can't wait to see your finished house, with all of you in it! Along with the stress and work of moving house there is also the excitement and promise of new beginnings!

Well, I understand the "no shoes" thing. But why do the kids come in through the front door instead of the garage?

As a Canadian, I find the concept of wearing shoes in the house absolutely foreign. We do not do that here, but when my friend (who lived in the US for a 5 years) moved here she would always leave her shoes on. We were shocked! Ha. I don't understand wearing shoes in the house. It's wonderful to not wear them all the time!

You will have clean your carpet stays when you become a no shoes family! We started doing that about 5 years ago and have only had to spot clean our carpet since. And our carpet is light beige!
