I Actually Cooked

Tonight ended rather nicely. I read the first chapter of Little House on the Prairie. I asked a few questions at the end one being, "Who do you think had it harder-- us or the Ingalls family?" Most of the kids answered them, but one answered us because we have to make so many decisions all the time-- like what clothes we are going to where the next day. Ha ha-- sounds really difficult.

On another note--

I was proud of myself for not succumbing to serving cold cereal for dinner since John wasn't home. Instead I made spaghetti and Caprese salad and wrote out my meal plan for the next few days. Tomorrow is either Creamy Chicken and Potato soup or meatballs, mashed potatoes, and corn on the cob. I can do this.

But just in case...

I stocked up on cereal.

LOL! If only we could go back to the Little House days. I would live like that any day. Simplicity.

My children must have thought I was ancient, as one of them asked me once "Mummy, when you were a little girl did you wear long dresses and bonnets like Little House on the Prairie?" But what is worse, I asked my grandmother if she was here when Christ was on earth!!!!

I have served cold cereal on occasion and no seemed to complain - thought it was funny in fact. Have some fruit with it or some toast and peanut butter - great meal for a change :-) More than the starving people around the world are having and a lesson for the children too.

Yes you can!!!! We loved reading the Little House books.

When the boys were younger, I read all of them to them. The boys would illustrate what I was reading and then share their illustration with everybody. Everybody would be drawn in to our oldest son's drawings. They were always hilarious! I still have them. Thanks for bringing back good memories. :)

I love the Little House on the Prairie books! When my sister and I were little, my mom read the entire series out loud to us. It was so great!

The dinner you made sounds yummy! The meal planning thing sounds like a great idea - I know that if I plan ahead for what's for dinner, I'm more likely to have the ingredients on hand and be ready to make it and less likely to go the quick and easy takeout route :-)

Somedays cold cereal is a blessing. Easy prep and clean up ;)

You should see if you can find The Little House Cookbook. I have one from my former teaching days. It might be a nice tie in after reading a chapter in the books.

I am going to look into a Little House cookbook. That would be fun.

Making up a menu helps me to make "real meals" instead of cereal. Although, who doesn't love cereal for dinner??

I hate cooking when my hubby isn't home too. He is my biggest fan! I resorted to fish sticks and french fries last night since he is gone. :)

I thought I was the only one who cut corners like that when Daddy is gone. I tend to make things like pancakes for dinner....
I love the Little House Books! I sometimes remember how difficult it was for them to have something like a pie, that we take so for granted....(I love how Laura and Mary each saved half a cookie for Carrie...good math lesson, there!)

There is an entire little house curriculum called The Prairie Primer.

I would give MANY "extra credit points" to the child who said the Ingalls had it better. I agree; absolutely. Not so many decisions, yes. Not so much stuff. Yes. Not so many factors tearing families apart. Fewer temptations. A more reflective way of life.

I can barely get my kids to enjoy cereal for breakfast. If I don't feel like cooking real food, I cook crepes and we eat them with peanut butter and nutella. For some reason, cooking crepes doesn't feel like cooking.
