I talked with the teacher and principal today. They gave me a better idea of what they were asking from me--- something they can present in addition to what they are doing. This is what I came up with and I included some pictures of Alex and Dennis together along with a family photo. Because these are children we are talking to, I wanted to keep the message light and at their level. I hope this letter achieves what it is meant to.
Hi. My name is Alex and my little brother is Dennis. We both go to school here and you have probably seen us walking with our Mom to our class. I am five years old and have to walk with crutches because my legs are not very strong. But don't worry about me because I can do most everything that you can do. I just do it differently. My brother Dennis is only three years old so you will get to see him next year too because he will still come to preschool. He is my best buddy and he helps open doors for me and brings me my crutches so we could go outside and play on our cool playplace. I think he is the bravest boy I know because he has had over seven surgeries on his face and eye. One of his eyes is not real because the doctor had to take out the real one because it stopped working right. He has some scars on his face too but they don't hurt him anymore because the doctor fixed them too! My brother Dennis is still always so happy that he makes me laugh until my tummy hurts! Do you have a brother who is your best friend too?
Our Mom and Dad love us very much! They take care of us and make sure that we get to do everything that you guys get to do! Last summer we rode on an airplane when we went on a big trip and afterwards we got to go to Knott's Berry Farm and ride all the fast rides! It was so cool! We have five big brothers and five sisters that do lots of things with us! It is so cool to go swimming with them and stay up late playing the Wii with them! They always tell us what awesome little brothers we are. How many brothers and sisters do you have?
We may look a little different than you do, but we promise we won't bite you! We think school is lots of fun and enjoy watching you bigger kids go to lunch and recess! Maybe some time we can give each other high fives! That's what my big brothers in high school and all of their friends always do to us.
Thanks for getting to know a little about us. If you ever want to ask us questions or talk to us we would like that very much, but please don't stare at us or make mean faces and funny noises when you see us because it makes our Mom sad. She taught us to treat others as we want to be treated and that staring is not very nice-- so we promise not to do that to you.

It looks like a great letter, the only thing is that you intro them both and then talk as just one of them. It is a bit confusing, perhaps you could write the whole thing just from Alex's perspective as he the big bro and he can intro his lil brother.
I hope that the school and the kids can learn to be more accepting of all people.
Hi again Christine!
I'd like to offer a little motto for Alex.
I always say that my disability doesn't stop me, it just slows me down. Sometimes.
I think that fits Alex too.
Have a good day.

Great letter! I too wrote a book about Bryson to share with his class. I put a picture on each page and a few sentences. My theme was more of how he was just like them than different.
Sounds wonderful! The only thing I noticed wrong was it says 5 brothers and sisters. I am sure you meant to put the number of sisters there :)
Thanks for all the suggestions. I made the changes. :)
It looks great! Hears hoping and praying that there will be less stares and much more acceptance!
I think your letter and the pictures would make a wonderful children's book.
I think the letter is great and I hope the kids really take it to heart.
Wow! You did a fantastic job on this. I think it is perfectly geared towards elementary age kids. Love that you suggested the high fives! I hope the boys both get lots of them next year.
I agree with what SSquyers said and think it would make a great book! Nicely done!
I absolutely love your letter! I am sure once the other kids get to know Alex and Dennis, they will LOVE them! I nominate you for Mother of the Year Award for being such a great advocate for your children.
I like your letter but I do have a suggestion. You mention that the teasing and staring hurts your feelings, but perhaps you could mention that it also hurts their feelings.
Wonderful letter, it would make a good book! I agree with Kristy though, you should definitely say it hurts their feelings too, not just yours.
Great letter!
I am not sure I agree with Christie and Cristina, I thought it was a nice point - we are OK, but do not upset our mother, she is so worried about us.
I love your letter, missed all the technical points others mentioned, but the spirit is right.

I think this is a great idea. Because it's for younger children, be careful to only include one idea per sentence. Long sentences can be pretty confusing for them - I'd suggest editing your Knott's Berry Farm sentence and making it 2 or 3 smaller sentences.
It might be worth getting one of the teachers or a friend to edit the grammar for you. I think it's fine for a blog, but if you're writing for children it's probably worth making sure the grammar is correct and ths sentence structures simple enough for them.
Have you though about doing it in a mini-book form? Even if it's shared between the classes. The boys are so photogenic, and it might mean kids who are tempted to stare get an opporunity to do so in book form rather than in person. Not sure if that's helpful or unhelpful though.
Bawling here. This is just awesome!
Perfect, you did a great job.
Wow Christine! Great job! I think that letter is such a great idea and very well done.

I agree with Sarah Bess...the tears are welling up here. Your boys are beautiful. Good for you for being proactive.
Brilliant!
Awesome letter. I have 2 kids. James is 4 and Samantha is 21 months with spina bifida, wears afo's and walks with a walker. It is still a few years away for Sam to go to kindergarten but she is going to preschool with her big bro next year. I figured i would go ahead and get her in mothers morning out 2 days a week. I want her to be treated as anyone else is treated. I may use some of your techniques in writing a letter especially when she gets older and goes to kindergarten. I love your blog. I will follow you on here. I just started blogging so i am not great at it but check out our pics! Look forward to talking to you and following you guys. i always get so excited when i meet other mamas with sb kids or any interesting people for that matter. You have a great family!
Jennifer
Wonderful, brought tears to my eyes, praying it opens many eyes to see your "real" boys and how special they really are.
