This past week we went back to the Spina Bifida Clinic for Alex's six month check-up. It was great seeing the same familiar faces-- and the look of surprise on their faces at how well Alex is doing was absolutely priceless. The encouragement we received was a nice touch to our whole visit.
The Urologist confirmed that Alex had not changed much since his last visit-- he still has a little bit of reflux on one side, his bladder does not empty very well, and cathing alone is not helping him to achieve continence. She has ordered a Urodynamics Test which should happen in a few months and she suggested I ask our Primary Care Physician to send a referral over to the GI Clinic so that Alex could have an Anal Monometry Test. Both of these tests are needed to assess whether or not Alex should have surgery to help achieve bladder/bowel continence. This is ultimately what we want for Alex-- I am sure it is what he would want too.
Through all of this, Alex continues to bless us with his happy upbeat spirit. He is such an amazing boy!
The Neurosurgeon suggested operating on Alex's tethered spine again-- to which I did not agree. Her only reason for doing it is because the surgery is easier the younger you have it done. My whole point is that he does not have any reason to have it done and the risks are too high. He could develop hydrocephalus, he could become non-ambulatory, and let's not forget the normal risks of infection and complications that come with any surgery. I just can't see him needing to do this now.... and I respectfully told her this. Thankfully, she agreed that this was not an urgent matter and appreciated me being so vocal regarding my son.
The Orthopaedist saw Alex too and agreed that his braces were not exactly the right fit. He could definitely benefit from better fitting braces that give his legs more suppport. She wrote a new prescription for braces-- which will be made by someone else this time-- and for a one inch leg lift on his shoe. The guy who will be making Alex's braces was at the appointment and the way he described them sounds awesome! We have an appointment this coming Monday!
Overall, Alex is doing so amazingly well that surgery isn't even being considered at this point for his legs or hips. This is a good thing since these kinds of surgeries are hard on anyone especially kids.
I am praising the Lord for all that He is doing through Alex. Alex continues to be a special blessing to those who meet him. His smile is contagious-- his curiosity is entertaining--- his zest for life is inspirational!

What a champ for going through all the pokes and prods and coming out looking so happy and beautiful after all of it. :) He is a gem!
Oh man, I agree his smile is contagious! I smile everytime I see a picture of him!!
Great to hear he is doing so well physically!
He always has a smile on his face, doesn't he? I'm so glad he's doing so well!
Oh, that smile!!
I've wondered about Alex and hydrocephalus. It is very common in kids with Spina Bifida, often from birth.
Praise God that he does not suffer from that right now!

Praising God for great reports, and so excited for Alex! What a wonderful little man, and so glad God knew what HE was doing to match up just the right family!!!
Everyone needs an advocate and Alex got one of the best. I am eager to see the lift on his shoe as my dad grew up with one and the boots he left behind are a treasure.
Keep on smiling, Alex!
What an upbeat report. I am sure there are days that you feel just drained trying to figure out the best way to help each child. Hugs & prayers.
How encouraging! I agree about the surgeries...have to weigh all the factors...wish we'd put of O's last one!
