It usually take me months to make a big purchase. I entertain the idea and casually research until I finally feel comfortable enough to go and buy it. I have been thinking about buying a new washer and dryer for nearly two years and I have yet to replace my old ones so to go and buy a new camera like I did today is totally out of character for me. But after using my old camera on Jonny's field trip today and realizing just how many pictures I take... I went out and took the plunge!
I am such an amateur at this point.... boy do I have so much to learn.
Are there any teachers out there?

Oooooh! A Canon Rebel XT! You're gonna have SO MUCH FUN!
Take it outside and shoot in the late afternoon sunlight. You'll fall off your chair when you see how beautiful your photos come out!
Enjoy!

Do you like it? After leaving mine at the Russian Embassy, I have missed having a camera always at the ready! Luckily my cell phone doess pretty good. . .but my husband really wants a really really nice camera. . .what kind did you go with? I saw some nice ones at Costco, but I am REALLY an amateur!

How exciting! I was just thinking the other day how nice it would be to have a good camera after looking at some of my pics. Will be a long time coming for me,though. (too many medical bills right now) Thanks for stopping by Creative and Curious Kids!
Impressed by your rather large family- God has blessed you for sure!

Wow-nice camera! :D Enjoy! Really nice cameras make for great pictures and are so fun to shoot with....my mom has almost the same one and I'm always itching to use it.
So... you went with the Rebel after all! You're going to love it! I would hock my wedding band before that camera. JK, but it would be a hard decision. ;)
Congratulations on your new camera! I love my SLR and enjoy playing around with different settings and composition ideas. My boys are my favourite subjects as proven by my blog!
Have fun with your camera.
Christine, I am so excited for you, and for us, your readers who will get to see even more beautiful photos on your blog!
I am a photographer, and my advice is to get out and use the camera and learn by doing! If you get stuck or need more information, then google it or read the manual. At some point sit down and read the manual (maybe on the plane to Ukraine?) but don't worry about doing that now, just start enjoying your camera. Also, there is a great community of photographers (most professional, some not) for portrait photography primarily of kids. http://ilovephotography.com/forums/ I am a member on the pro side, but years ago joined the board on the "Just Starting Out" side. It is an amazing resource, a fabulous place to ask questions or just search for information. People share photos and give critique, it is wonderful!! I know you are super busy, but I think you will find it incredibly valuable and a wonderful boost to your photography. There are loads of photography boards out there, but in my opinion this one is the best.
Also feel free to email me if you have any questions, I would be honored to help!

We'll be learning at the same time! Maybe we can compare notes. LOL I bought my Rebel just a couple days before I left on my trip. Never read the manual, just started messing around with it. Really, I had no clue what I was doing, but got lucky a few times and got some incredible pictures. I just took my first class a couple days ago, but haven't had time to practice anything we learned yet. Hopefully this weekend I'll get a chance to. Here's to learning the art of photography!
♥ How fun! Sometimes you just need to treat yourself! :)
ps I saw you took off the anonymous comments (can't spell)... Good for you! :)
Yay! You are gonna LOVE this camera! Enjoy!
Awesome! I am actually going out to buy a new camera this weekend. I am pretty set on the Canon Rebel, so I hope yours treats you well. I'm excited to see the upcoming pictures!
That's just like my new camera that I got in January. I just took my first class this morning and am SO excited to know what some of the buttons are for. :) I am on the I Heart Faces forum too [as someone mentioned above] and would totally recommend it. I haven't asked any questions or posted any comments yet. But even just reading others' input is SO very helpful!
I NEED a new camera so bad... I would love the have the Rebel... I know you are frugal... where did you get the best price??? Maybe this will be my Mother's Day/birthday gift :)
I think that may be the same camera we bought a month or so ago! We decided we wanted a digital SLR before we headed back to Ukraine. We're learning a lot about it and having fun getting used to it. Can't wait to use it in UA!
Wow congrats! I am like you, I tend to research products for awhile before buying one. I want either the camera you got or a Sony one... eventually! Have fun!
This is the same camera I have and I LOVE it! The best way to learn is just practice. Take lots of pictures and see what works for you.
Christine! You got a Rebel--I've been wanting one of those. I'll be saving my pennies! :-)))
Oh, that is GORGEOUS!! I'm drooling right now...LOL The Rebel is my next one on the list...I have a really good Sony SLR right now that I love! I'm a student of photography right now, and I have to say that just the one Fundamentals class I've taken so far taught me SOOOOOO MUCH about how to use my camera to create amazing shots!! If you can spare the time for it, I absolutely recommend taking a semester-long course at a community college or the like for the fundamentals of photography. It was life-changing!! =D
