I should of expected this. It was the worst camera I have ever owned anyway. My Panasonic Lumix 10X optical zoom will no longer take a picture. It was working one evening and the next morning it wasn't. Part of me is shouting hooray because now I have an excuse to get a new camera, but no part of me is excited about dropping a few hundred dollars in a new camera.
Maybe I should look into a used camera off of Ebay like the one I bought before this-- identical to my all time favorite camera the Canon PowerShot G2 which I dropped in the river. But then again, still a few hundred dollars with no guarantees. At least my used Canon G2, old as it may be, is still taking pictures. So that is what I am using for now. That and another camera that my cousin gave me last year when he bought his new one.
Both are getting old, one drains the battery quickly, and the other memory card doesn't fit my computer. Ugh. Honestly, I think it is time to get a new one. But I have no clue which one I should get. This is where all of you come in. Pretty please, let me know what your favorite camera is and how much you paid for it. Thanks ahead of time!

I have a Canon Powershot. It's small, easy to use, and is one of the only digital cameras that still has a viewfinder. I like that in case something happened, I can still see to take pix.
It's got video also but it's really easy to use. The battery lasts a good long time.
It's about $125.
maybe look into seeing how much it would cost to get either of your cameras repaired?
To have a camera repaired can almost as much as a new camera. Are you sure it's not just the batteries? I am sure you would have checked that. I only ask because that happened to me......silly me!
I got a Canon Rebel xti SLR 3 years ago and LOVE it! I do some photography on the side and have a link to that blog on my family one. Anyway, it was worth the money. It was $723 on buydig.com, but listed $899 at Wal-Mart and Target and I got free shipping and no taxes. They're even cheaper now! I do not regret one penny and it has practically paid for itself, because I've made a little money taking pictures for others and saved a bundle doing my daughter's senior portraits myself. My 14 month old grandson has NEVER had professional portraits done thanks to this camera. With all your kids, and your blog, it's definitely worth it to get a good one. :)
Canon USA website--- the official one--- has an online store on it that sells refurbished ones, too and they do come with at least a limited guarantee. Check there before you decide.
if you are looking for a point and shoot I LOVE kodak, but if you really like taking pictures think about a DSLR..like a canon or nikon..I have a nikon D60 and I LOOOOVE it!
I have a small simple Nikon Coolpix from Target for around $100 and it has been fine for me, no problems in 1.5 years. Nikon is usually a reliable brand. Plus for only $100 you don't feel bad if you lose or break it.
Canon--anything Canon is awesome. Not overly fond of Nikon, but it will do in a pinch.
We have the Olympus Stylus 850 SW. It is just a point and shoot, but it is freezeproof, shockproof and waterproof. You can drop it from 5 feet, take it in a swimming pool, etc. We've done both-- even dropped it when horseback riding once and it was fine. I bet it would be a blast taking it in the pool in the summer. Ours is almost two years old and still going strong. We have a nice, expensive camera and then this one and we almost always reach for this one, because we don't have to worry about breaking it.
Cannon Rebel! It is an SLR and takes AMAZING photos! Bought it at Costco for $800. Pricey but certainly one of the best investments I have ever made and it has certainly more than paid for itself the past 4 years.....and still doing great! Can take up for 440 photos too!
Oh, I forgot to tell you... ours was $299 for Best Buy, but that was almost 2 years ago, so I imagine that you could get it a lot cheaper off of ebay or somewhere else online now.
I have the Sony mini slr Cybershot camera. It is all automatic and takes awesome pics like a real slr camera does. I love it!
I buy all my electronics on tigerdirect.com and I've never had any problems with them. I now have a Kodak easyshare which is easy to use and a great camera. Here's a link of one for $99:

I have a Sony Cyber-shot 7.2 mp camera which I LOVE! I've owned it for 2.5 years now and I haven't had any issues with it. It takes good, clear photos, pretty great videos AND it has customizable settings. I often shoot in vivid mode which makes the colors "pop." It ran me about $225 (I think it retailed for $250), but because I'm err...strong willed...they threw in a bunch of free stuff. I walked into circuit city having done my research (I'd found a package deal online) and when I pointed out how much better the online deal was, they gave me the camera for the discounted price and threw in a 4gb memory card, a spare battery, and a camera case. A pretty sweet deal if you ask me! I think the cybershots are on sale at Best Buy right now...some as low as $150.
Canon Rebel XSI Purchased from costco around 800. Worth every penny. I can take over 900 pics, battery last forever, quick, quick, shutter, easy to put on automatic and get great photos and then later you can learn the manual mode and get very creative. Blurry background, etc. I absolutely love it! There is a review on my blog- under canon rebel in the labels.
Thanks for asking this question. I am hoping I can just replace the battery in mine. So far I havent been able to find the size but one of your commentors reminded me of Tigerdirect...... great place I might add. We got our cell phone batteries there.
I have the same problem, my current camera is being held together with a rubberband and duct tape. I can't find anything I like as much as the one I have. I have a Nikon cool pix-without the lenses that move in and out-also have a nikon cool pix with the lens that moves in and out-It took great pictures but is not very durable-the camera store said that those types of lenses -of any brand are delicate-someone should have told me that before I carried it in my back pocket and let my six year old use it. Let us know what you end up with-maybe it will help me. Cara
I have a PowerShot SX10 IS
It is a larger camara. Definately not purse size, but it is a GREAT camara. I don't remember what I payed. I know they quiet a bit of money, but maybe if you can find a used one you may be able to get it for a good price.
Have you ever heard of SquareTrade.com? I purchased two used cell phones on Ebay for my teenage daughters for Christmas last year from a high-volume Ebay seller. By dumb luck both of the phones had problems within two months. Luckily I decided to purchase the (extremely cheap) Square Trade warranty. They came through as promised, repaired and returned one of them promptly, and the for the other they refunded me the FULL purchase price! I was very pleasantly surprised and highly recommend them for any electronics purchase! I hope this helps you with your decision. I can totally relate to your dilemma!
Lisa :)
I just ordered the Canon Powershot S90. It was $380 on Amazon. Supposed to be for advanced amatuer photographers.
For portraits I use my Nikon D80 SLR. It takes awesome pics. But it is the lenses of SLR's that give you the professional look.
It is too big and bulky to take everywhere so I always keep a "street shooter" in my purse.
Hi Christine,
I use a Canon Powershot S5IS. What I like about it is that its easy to use, it has 12X optical Zoom and actually gets clear pictures from zoom. I can do things like make a black and white picture have one color highlighted. (Such as all the kids and background black and white and a pumpkin will show up the color it is. Loved the pic I took that way!) Its got custom colors, video, scene shots...and the list goes on. I got it for free by trading in saftey points at work but I know that in Walmart or Staples different versions of this same camera are between $200- $450. (CND) I have used this same camera for 2 plus years as my main camera and the S1IS for 3 years before this one. Family trips all over, daily use and to get Oksana in Kaz..Its never failed me yet. :) I sure hope you find one that works for you and that you like. I don't know what I would do without mine thats for sure. (Oksana comments that I have a camera attached to my face half the time!)

If you are going to help your children with their homework I hope you double check their grammar and spelling because yours is very often incorrect. For example: "shouldn't of" should be "shouldn't have".
It is so important that children learn the basics at home!
Looks like the Canon Rebel is the one to look into...with three great reviews here, I have also heard good things. I am not ready to take that step to an SLR, but hope to one day! Blessings on your search because you can't stop taking pictures of your ever changing troop! :)
I have a Nikon Coolpix L5 and it's great! I use it for my food photography, shots of my kids and it has a stabilizer thingy for when your hand shakes on zooms, to make sure you get a decent pic. I think it cost about $200 (bought it in Guate, so not positive).
If you like the G2, the G11 by Canon would be great. Also the G9 might be worth looking into or any of the G series for that matter. I work for a large electronics retailer and the Canon cameras get the best comments from the customers and seem to take abuse on display fairly well. They are fairly expensive cameras but are worth it I think.
I use a Canon Powershot SX20 IS. Its a bridge camera with super-zoom. It has 12mp and a 20x optical zoom (and 4x digital, that's 80 times overall!). It takes amazing pictures, even zoomed up close. Its a little more advanced than a point-and-shoot, but not as advanced as a DSLR. That's why its called a bridge. It was $360 on Amazon, but I've seen them cheaper.
Thank you for all of your suggestions! It is so hard to choose!
