The Trooper

Everything went according to plan during surgery. His mold was poured for his new prosthetic eye and then he was operated on for a few hours. They got me immediately when he showed signs of waking up because they couldn't calm him down. He was breathing incredibly hard and he was pulling at everything. I was able to soothe him much easier than previous surgeries-- which was great for all us.

We were moved to a room before noon and after a dose of Morphine he dozed off back to sleep.

Kristen and Linda came and visited us-- only to find out the hospital was on strict lockdown due to the H1N1 virsus. They were able to linger outside our room and peak their heads in the door to say Hi to Dennis. Thanks for stopping by girls-- it was much to short!

It was obvious that Dennis did not want to be in the hospital and so I asked if we could go home if he showed signs that he was ready. The doctor okayed this and so we worked on getting Dennis to eat. He threw up a few times early on and once as late as 5 o'clock-- but he finally held food and drink down after that and wanted to sit up and go potty.

My Mom came out and stayed with us and pampered us-- which was wonderful. Thanks Mom!

We got home around 9pm. When I woke up, Dennis had pulled off his bandage (which was going to come off anyway) and was raring to go. He wanted to get up and play and eat and get back to his regular routine.

He was interested in seeing his owies and now understands why not to touch them.

The doctor essentially gave Dennis a face lift to bring cheek fat up where his right temple indents.

He will have much less of a bald spot too.

Dennis has been a love bug all day.

Praise God everything went so well!

  2. He's always been beautiful - but the transformational results of the surgeries are truley remarkable.

I was wondering if you'd do a post some time on the progress surrounding verbal communication and conversational abilities.

So glad things went well. Take Care.

  7. Totally amazing....and he really is looking different and better.

I don't know quite why, with this set of photos, I just wanted to cuddle that sweet brave little boy. He is so lucky to have you, Christine and your soft heart to rest against - to say nothing about lots of nurturing sisters.

  14. He's such a big boy now! In that last picture he could pass for 5 or 6, and he looks amazing as always.

I only just realised that it is Julia with Dennis in that last picture, not you.

  17. He's such a trooper! And- those dr's have already made such remarkable changes in his face- those before and after photos, or rather then and now photos, you previously posted and nothing short of remarkable, marvelous, awesome , or what ever other adjective in the superlative one might use. Truly impressive.

I'd say in the last 20-30 years medicine has made some stunning improvements and changes in all our lives. We're so lucky to live in these times!

  24. Christine I can't get over how different he looks already. I remember when Isaac has his eye surgery to correct both his eyes that turned in and down, just that made him look likea totally different little boy. It was great, a little strange, but great. so glad all went well and that Dennis seems so interested in his surgery. Isaac was the same way.

    Blessings,
    Sue

  41. The changes from when he first got home are amazing!!! My little boy, AJ had a facial deformity when he came to us at 14 months. He is now 6, and has looked at the pictures of Dennis you have posted overtime and said they the before and after pictures are not the same person, they are brothers :). (AJ had several major surgeries until he was 3, now he has an occasional surgery to adjust something minor. Luckly he doesn't remember the pain the hospital caused him and is not upset to have another surgery)
