A Family That Cooks (And Prays) Together Stays Together

One of the things I made for dinner tonight was Scalloped Potatoes. They are Adam's favorite! So, I had him peel the potatoes. Next, Julia sliced them. And little ol' Dennis helped me layer the potatoes.

Annalyn grated the cheese.

They are a fairly simple to make. I don't really have a recipe but I can tell you what I used this time. I used 8 potatoes, 2 cups of homemade white sauce, 1/4 cup butter, and 1/2 pound of medium cheddar cheese. Simply layer the ingredients and cook at 350 for 1 1/2 hours.

I usually cover or uncover the potatoes half way through baking them (depending on how I started out cooking them) to keep them from turning out like this. I didn't do it this time because I didn't want the cheese to stick to the foil. Oops. And you want another confession? The potatoes in the very middle didn't cook completely. Nothing makes a Mom feel better than hearing one of their kids say-- Mom, did you know that my potatoes are still crunchy?
Oh well, you can't win them all.

This month is a busy one for John at work. After coming home later than usual, he ate, did bible study time with the kids and then headed back to work.
I am so thankful that we have such a spiritual leader heading up our family.

Looks like the potatoes tastes good, despite their middle! I love the amount of time you always spend making sure your kids are involved in your house. What a wonderful thing!

I love this, and can't wait until Logan is old enough to enjoy cooking with mommy (and daddy when he's making spaghetti ;-)

I absolutely love your family, and am soooo inspired by your kindness and love!

Ooops! I've totally done the crunchy potato thing too :-) They look very yummy in the pics, though, and I can't wait to try out your recipe.

One thing I like to do is add the cheese last to scalloped potatoes. Put everything in the pan but the cheese, cover it with tinfoil, and then bake until the potatoes in the middle are tender. Then, add the cheese, put it back in the oven, and bake for another few minutes (or broil it, if you're in a hurry) until the cheese is melted and has those yummy crispy bits. This method stops the cheese from burning before the potatoes finish cooking.

I love reading about the things you cook, Christine - keep 'em coming!

This made me laugh out loud: "Nothing makes a Mom feel better than hearing one of their kids say-- Mom, did you know that my potatoes are still crunchy?" since last night I made a pasta bake that didn't cook completely and we had crunchy pasta on the top. Oh well, the kids liked it that way! LOL

I think those potatoes look yummy and I kind of like them browned on top. Maybe I'll try cooking up a batch too... Cooking for four has become quite the challenge. I don't know how I'll ever learn to cook for just two. I don't even know how to grocery shop for less than ten!

I am curious what else you fixed with the potatoes!

Another yummy thing to add to the scallopped potatoes is some chopped ham and hey presto! A meal in one pan. That and a salad is great!

We love those over here too. Love the crunchy part. :)

It is really a blessing to have a strong spiritual leader in the home.
More than we will ever know.

It is precious to see Rachel sitting so close to her dad, and spending time with you. What a precious girl.

I am always inspired by the way your family works as a team....even with the simple every day stuff like cooking. Even with our one and only (for now), I aspire to encourage Nick to be a part of the "team" just like you guys do. I am sure it is not always smooth sailing but I can only imagine the invaluable tools you are giving your kids by teaching thru example, teamwork, and God's word! You go Girl!

That looks delicious! Do you tell me that 8 potatoes was enough to feed the 14 of you? How big were those potatoes then? I wonder because it sounds like something I could have done for the 5 of us and we would have finished it......

That looks YUMMY!!! My sweet little Dragon asked to help with dinner tonight just as I was putting the last things on the plates. He was so disappointed that he couldn't help. He had already set the table and got the drinks! I love it when kids help with a smile!
