After the older kids were driven to school, I took Alex and Dennis to their Christmas party--- which was a lot of fun.
Teacher Gina is both of the boys' main teacher-- and she is wonderful with them. Here she is with Alex helping him make reindeer crackers.
The boys made graham cracker houses. I ended up frosting the houses so that Alex and Dennis could decorate them with candy. I'm not sure if more of it ended up on their houses or in their mouths.
Alex has some issues with fine motor skills, so this was a fun challenge for him.
Dennis wanted only candy on his house, but I sneaked in a couple of animal cookies to be playful.
Dennis was too cute doing this project. He wanted only the dark red macaroni for his necklace. Every time I would give him a green macaroni he would shake his head and say, "No thank you." And when Alex and another boy came over to join him, he quickly snagged all of the dark red macaroni for himself. That stinker!
Alex on the other hand didn't really care what color macaroni he got-- and after he strung five or so, he was tired (it's the fine motor thing I was talking about) so I just tied it up and said all done.
I had to slip away for a half hour to take Andrew and Annalyn to the dentist for fillings---- and what do you know--- Santa visited the pre-school class while I was gone. But thanks to Teacher Debbie, I will get pictures of Alex and Dennis with Santa. I heard that neither of them cried, and Alex just loved Santa's soft velvety outfit.

Alex and Dennis made these beautiful Christmas trees, so of course, I hung them up when we got home. Washed a few loads of clothes, changed the dogs' bedding, planned dinner, and ran to the grocery store.
After lunch, I took Alex to finally get his AFOs. They were supposed to be in two days ago so that he could wear them to his Orthopaedic appointment yesterday, but it didn't work out. Before I forget, the Orthopaedic surgeon, who was in essence our second opinion, thought that it would be beneficial for Alex to have hip surgery after all to correct his dislocated hip. Of course, he is going to check with his colleagues before the final decision is made, but after considering how the surgery can make a huge difference for Alex, we are going to pursue this if the doctor says it is a go.

Now back to his AFO appointment.
It was neat seeing how Alex's braces were cut down to size to fit his feet just right. In the end, it was decided that Alex should have straps around his calves to help stabilize him more. That took 15 extra minutes.
While that was being done, Alex's knee immobilizer was cut to fit his little leg.
Of course Alex needed some bigger shoes to accommodate the braces, so he picked out these Buzz LightYear shoes. Pretty cool if you ask us!
Two weeks ago, if I held Alex up at the thighs while he was standing, he would bend over at the waist unable to hold his torso up. He muscles were that underdeveloped. We started rigorous physical therapy ( at home based on what the physical therapist showed me) and within a week he was able to hold himself up for two and a half minutes. Fast forward to today, and I held Alex up at his calves and he was able to stand for a solid minute! He is gaining strength everyday--- he is so amazing!

Just wonderful! It's SO amazing what lots of love and a little therapy can do for a child. I have seen it SO many times through fostering handicapped children... it's just astounding what working those unused muscles can do for them.
Well done mama! Alex is doing so fantastic!
How wonderful Alex is progressing! I'm sure he will be cruising around with his new AFO's in no time! How nice that the boys have one another in school :o) (at home as well). Dennis is too cute wanting only the red macaroni, he certainly knows what he wants and doesn't want! Dennis's fine motor skills are't affected by only having vision in one eye? He appears to have adapted well.
Wow, what a day for you. You are supermom for sure.
I love how you put Alex and Dennis' Christmas trees above the mantle. That has to mean a lot to them.
That is great news about Alex....keep it up little man. Sounds like everyday you are getting stronger.
That's great news about Alex!
Cxx
Alex amazes me. Dennis amazes me. YOU amaze me my friend. Have a Merry Christmas!
What a busy day!! A trick that I just learned not that long ago with the AFOs is to not be afraid to rip out the cushion on the inside soles of the shoes. It gives you more room for the AFOs and to fit.
Your children are beautiful and I love how you never try to paint them as perfect. There was a day when I was afraid my children would bicker their entire lives, but I am happy to say that isn't so.
The Christmas trees over the mantle are adorable!
Yeah, Alex!
yes they are amazing. the kids I mean. Ben has learned to take off his clothes and now is starting to put them on. he can eat without making a mess now. he can eat without giving it to Sophie. Sophie can get on her hands and knees and is working hard at getting up from turtle. She can feed herself great now too. she makes less mess than if I fed her myself! do you know anyone who has experience with HIV adoption? we are considering going back to Ptown for two girls in Bens groupa who were so special. it is suspected they have HIV.
They are beautiful boys! Alex looks so happy!
Way to go Alex!!!! It is so great to hear how the boys are getting stronger!
Amazing how much progress they can make when someone believes in them.
It is amazing how fast they can start to do things, given the opportunity.
I laughed at Dennis's red macaroni pile. I just love little kids. :)
The AFO's will do much to stabilize him.
We had hip surgery and reconstuction done along with an osteotomy a year and a half ago. The hip surgery made a big difference in Erika's ability to walk better, and keep her hip from dislocating every time she took a step.
What a day you had! I hope you had hot cocoa last night. :)
So excited for Alex and the AFO's. As someone who has worn different versions of them for as long as I can remember, I can truly attest to the miracles that they will help to facilitate! Way to go, Alex!
I just would like to say you THANK YOU, Christine. Thank you for everything you do for these children. You and your husband are amazing people! Happy Christmas for all your family! (piosima)
Hooray Alex! I'm so happy to hear how all of his hard work is paying off. :) Nice art work too guys!
Christine,
I just wanted to say that I think Alex looks absolutely wonderful and you can see the love he has in his eyes now. He no longer looks scared and confused. I think it is awesome!
He is really growing too. I love the his new shoes. I bet he is going to do great with his new braces.
As far as the surgery goes, I am very happy to hear that you guys are going to do it if the Doctor feels it is needed. I honestly think it will help Alex so much.
Merry Christmas to you!
Sheila
