Mom's Weekend Summary

Despite our family still being bogged down by lingering sickness, our family managed to have a productive weekend nonetheless.

On Friday night, we attended a social at the Music school Adam and Julia go to. It was awesome! We had pizza, met new people, and were treated to live music as we worshipped God. It was all good.

Saturday, we all went to our daughter Rachel's last soccer game of the season. She was knocked down once-- but got right back up. The coach had her play all four quarters-- and in the end they won! Later that night she went to a pizza party with John and Caleb. Each of the team players received t-shirts and medals for fourth place! Way to go Rachel!

Adam and Caleb went back to having bunk beds to make room for the couch that our cousins gave us. Now their room is "Teen Central" and Adam has a place to sit and play his guitar. I was happy about the rearrange because the boys cleaned the blinds and vacuumed the baseboards and washed their bedding. Speaking of bedding, one of the boys thought they could save on time by adding three loads worth of bedding to the washer at one time--- only for me to find the agitator seized up. I was not a happy camper. I expect the washer to go out any time now and John has encouraged me to get the washer and dryer of my dreams--- yet I can't bring myself to do it yet. Maybe I'll go look at them at Lowes this coming weekend, and then come home and think about it, and then go back again, and then come home and look online. Finally when I decide to actually buy them, maybe our washer will have washed its last load and I won't feel so bad for buying them.

Saturday night, we watched the new "Little House on the Prairie" series of movies. They were running a marathon for two nights of all the Laura Ingalls Wilder movies and Janette Oakes "Love Comes Softly" series and we watched most of them. And we loved each and every one of them!

Sunday morning we went to church. It was awesome to hear a similar talk on what we we just read in Purpose Driven Life. Amazing how God choreographs little things like that. Nice for my kids to hear the same thing coming from someone else. Later in the evening, we met with our small group for our bible study and dinner. It was nice as always-- and the food was delicious.

Alex and I are working on communicating going to the bathroom. I believe that he has some sensation of when he goes to the bathroom and I am insisting that he let me know when he goes. At first this was hit and miss-- but now he is telling me more regularly. Granted I had to be more firm with him, but I try to remember to be just as uplifting when he does tell me. This is to push him to become more aware of what is going on down there as well as getting him changed quickly so he doesn't sit around in a soiled or wet diaper.

Annalyn is showing improvement in some of the areas that she was struggling in since going on the medication. She is more focused on her school work and is more aware of her surroundings. Her relationships with her sisters have improved, and I no longer wait in anticipation to see what is going to happen next with her. It is refreshing. I have caught her more than once, up and cleaning off the table after a meal without being asked. Her room is neater and she has earned back some of her belongings that had been put up in our closet. The goal of taking away some of her things was to get her to become a better steward of fewer things before having even more things to have to keep neat and tidy. For the time being-- she has proved to me that she can keep more things and for that I am excited. She is back to walking to school with her siblings, and her non-sensical lying has gotten much better. She did slip the other day about putting cat food on the front porch-- but she was quicker to confess and didn't dig herself deeper with arguing. I periodically ask her what she is thinking, how she is feeling, and if there is anything she wants to talk about. Mostly I am just giving her time to adjust and get used to how things are now. That in itself will take time.

The weather is finally cooling down--- evident by me reaching for the thermostat first thing this morning and kicking it up a degree to get the chill out of the house. Ahhhh, now I can enjoy my morning cup of joe. Before all the kids got a chance to eat-- we ran out of milk. Aww shucks. Looks like Caleb will have to make cinnamon rolls.

How was your weekend?

Well....not nearly as fun OR productive! I have to work all day on Sundays which is discouraging. It used to be that we only had evening programs but now I have to be here at 7:30 a.m. and with a short afternoon break am here until 6:30 or 7. Exhausting! Then the week starts!

Sounds like a great weekend!

Last year, I was really wanting the Electrolux washer/dryer set that did loads in 18 minutes. That way I could do all our laundry (for 8 people) in 2 hours every couple days.

Now though, I just bought two stackable washer/dryer sets off craigslist and my wonderful husband is going to set them up this week so we can do twice the laundry for each trip downstairs!

We had a fun weekend, too. As the twins wer eoff school on Friday I picked Craig up before the school Kabbalat Shabbat (kinda like chapel in a Christian school) and my whole family headed down to Jerusalem to see my sister and her husband. We had a lot of fun, went to the Kotel (Wailing Wall) after the Shabbat went out, and generally had a lot of fun. Sunday morning, however, was painful, as we had to get up way too early to get back to Tel Aviv in time for school/work.

Sounds like a great weekend! It's refreshing to hear that Annalyn is doing better. Oh, and those Whirlpool Cabrio washer and dryer--Roy bought me those in August and I LOVE them! The washer is 5 cubic feet and the dryer is 7 cubic feet inside. I can do 3 loads all at once in the washer. I LOVE IT! The only thing I had to adjust is to buy HE (high efficiency) laundry soap. Oh do treat yourself and buy them! If anyone deserves it it's YOU!

We went to Reformation Celebration on Friday night, where about 150 people showed up for all kinds of Mexican food, a lesson on a new Reformer (John Calvin) this year. There was a Pinata for the kids and then it was off to bed at around midnight.

We had Ministry group on Saturday night, where we are going through the Book by Timothy Kellar, "The Prodigal God".... that is also a pot luck.
Sunday A.M. was church and Sunday School and then we all went to Dickey's BBQ for lunch.
After that, we played Chess where Dad was the proud winner for the day.

This a.m., school. We finished Ancient Greece and finished our Biography on Alexander the Great.

Next is Ancient Rome.

I have a front loading wash machine, and I hate it. Check them out really well. Mine has a rubber gasket inside the door, that is not attached on the inner side. This causes moisture to stay in there, and unless you keep it wiped out and dry it gets musty smelling. I liked my top loading washer much better, but like yours it finally wore out. I wish I had replaced it with another top loading. But was fooled by the sales pitch on how wonderful front loaders are, NOT! Anyways just my two cents worth. Toni

I watched the Little House movies too and really enjoyed them. In fact, I did a post on my blog about it.

I didn't watch the movies on Sunday as they started in the morning and I had things to do around the house all day. I wish they'd repeat the movies on a cold winter Sunday. I could be home cooking for the week and enjoying them.

I bought a pomagranate and thought of you. It was $2.50!

It was 69 here in CT yesterday which is unusual for Nov. so it was nice to be outside a bit.

My top load washer was only a few years old when family circumstances changed and I needed the "laundry room" for another purpose. The only reasonable place for my laundry machines would mean I'd have to have a stackable front-load set. I reluctantly sold my top load set (which had an extra large capacity drum!) and bought a front load set. I wasn't enthusiastic, to say the least.

BUT.....Oh, Christine......I LOVE MY FRONT LOAD washer!!!!! It takes sooo many more articles to make up a full load! In my house (as I'm sure is the case in your house) there is NEVER a shortage of laundry to be washed! I can put on my huge King sized comforter, with room to spare! At first the HE liquid detergent seems very expensive to purchase, but in comparison to the more than full cup of powdered detergent, the front load takes around a quarter of a cup of detergent (maybe slightly less?) and the big jug we buy lasts at least a month or more! And if you are environmentally conscious, the front load uses a fraction of the water to do the same job, as well!

I am completely sold on my front load machine. I've had it since about January 09, and I will NEVER go back to the old top load style with the agitator that just takes up room! I'm very happy with my front load!

I encourage you to give it some serious thought......ask around of people you know who may have one. I'm betting you will be happy if you get one!

I would get a commercial size washer and dryer for your size family. Ventura TV in Fresno has a 1 X month floor sample sale.
bought a 1,000 washer for $600 it had a slight scratch in it (big deal)
you should call them and ask for the next date of their floor sale.

I'm with Toni. I got a new front-loader and you actually are supposed to give it "treatments" to keep it from smelling bad. I HATE that! Other downsides:
Once the cycle starts you can't add items.
When you open the door the clean clothes want to tumble out on the floor.
If something gets stuck under the rubber seal, it can be damaged, then you get leaking and have to call the repairmen in.

Hey I watch Little House all the time with my 8 yr old... have various seasons on DVD - It was one of my favorites as a child...

Your weekends sound slike mine in that its all about family : ) but NOT like mine for obvious reasons...on Saturday we did some early Xmas shopping for kids (with them in tow - boy that was hard!)...On Sunday was my MIL birthday so we had her over for cake and a visit, went to the park for the kids to play...

I am glad about all the improvement you are having with Alex, Annalyn...I have had some imporvement with my 2 yr old lately too...its so fulfilling to see you are getting SOMEWHERE..even if it is baby steps!

Hugs!

Hi Christine,

Just thought i would add my thoughts on front loading washing machines. I come from England where all the washers are front loaders and would thoroughly recommend them. There is no agitator to tangle (and rip!) the clothes, large loads are gently but thoroughly washed in much less water thus saving this valuable resource as well as electricity. Also you are likely to find the spin speed much higher than your current machine and should save $$ on drying laundry. I know you are thrifty so wish you luck in finding a good deal!

I sneezed alot, otherwise a good family weekend. i agree with John - get the best washer you can find. A good washer is essential for your sanity!

The Whirlpool Cabrio is not a frontload Christine. It's a top-loader with no agitator in the center.

Sounds like a great weekend overall! Sorry about the washer! My Alex and I are working on potty communication as well...if I take him to the bathroom every hour he will go with no problem, but he just won't tell me when he has to go in between those times!

You need those Cabrios. My husband bribed me with 2 sets of them in order to get me to move. It worked. :) My favorite room in the house is my laundry room!

That washer/dryer set looks very cool! I'm all for getting laundry done faster! And the idea of being able to put comforters in there is very appealing, too. Even with 5 kids at our house the laundry can get overwhelming--can't imagine yours!

It looks like you are making real progress on the fronts with Alex and Annalyn. Good job! It's hard to persevere when you're not sure what to expect.

Regarding the front loaders with rubber gaskets - I've had my machine for two years and have found that all I have to do is clean it really well with hot water and white vinegar. Mine has never acquired an odor. If it is acquiring an odor, check to make sure the drain is clear. My aunt has one of these machines too and I notice that hers smelled. So, I decided to clean it for her. Vinegar didn't do the job, I had to use bleach to clean it first, and also had to pull about 4 years of lint and hairs out of the drain. Once I did that then it stopped smelling. Now she is using vinegar to keep it clean and no more smell!

Interesting about your front loading laundry machines souring/smelling bad. Mine hasn't ever done that, and I've had it 6 years. I live in South Texas - maybe it's climate? Frequency of use? I run mine every daY, usually more than once. I really like that it self adjusts for the size of the load so it doesn't waste water. The drying is much easier too, with that fantastic spin cycle.

I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE, my Whirlpool Duet front loaders. I've had mine about 5 years, and we've never had a problem with smells. We had 14 of our family living at home this summer, and we never got backed up with laundry.

Our family loves the Little House movies. We buy them by the Season at Costco. I think we have about 4 Seasons worth.

My teen boys have really liked having a couch in their bedroom for a couple of years. We have 1 bunk bed in there, and a loft bed (over the love seat).

I LOVE the fall ... and my hot cup of Mocha in the a.m.

Hope your family is all feeling better by now.
