Literally, One More Step

Today Alex was casted for his AFOs (ankle foot orthotics). It was very interesting.

While we waited, Alex showed me how he can take off and put back on his socks. This is a huge milestone for him but he is slowly mastering it!

After drawing where his bones are, the orthotics man put a sock on Alex and then stuck a big rubber tube in it come time he needed to saw off the cast.

He dipped the casting material in warm water and wrapped Alex's leg from his knee to his toes. He slowly positioned Alex's feet the right way as the cast hardened.

It looked as if a light bulb went on when Alex looked at his legs and said, "My shoes!"

Alex is understanding so much English now that I was able to explain the process of sawing through the cast. And he didn't cry-- which is also another milestone for Alex.

In about three weeks, Alex should have his leg braces!
How cool is that!

I always love how big his smile is...he seems like such a happy child and very easy going. I hope he is thrilled about his new "Shoes" in a few weeks! :)

His smile is so contagious! I love it! Curtis wore AFO's for two years. They helped him so much. I hope they do that same for Alex. He is a quick learner.

Did he get to choose pictures or patterns for his AFOs? I'm told that is the most important bit.

He is so cute! That is the same process they use for prosthetics.

Ask if they put designs on.... our team is always very creative and they can make great designs on the legs by using material. I don't know how but I have seen everything from Hannah Montana to full cammo, to spider man...it makes other kids look at the cool design instead of that it is a brace.

How tiny his little feet are! He is such a sweet little fellow. I see why you didn't have the heart to leave him in Russia.

I was wondering how they make those the other day when I saw some on a guy in McD's and thought about Alex. Cool.

Alex is doing so well, you must be so proud. I remember when my daughter had her first AFO's, she was good about it to. xx

I love the curious look on his face in the one picture, then the huge smile in the next...he is SO cute. It is amazing that he is so co-operative and calm about the whole thing, especially with the saw. He is comfortable and trusting, and that is incredible for a child his age. Good job, Christine! Your love and patience did that!

I had a friend when I was a kid who wore leg braces. I have no idea why... we were kids and didn't care. I remember how exciting it was when she graduated out of the braces :)
