A Camping We Will Go

On Friday, after pulling all of the kids out of school early, we packed up to head over to the coast. The kids were excited to go!

Once camp was set up, all that was left to do was have fun. The kids enjoyed the campfires a lot! Poor William burnt his hand accidentally when he grabbed the rim of the fire pit, but other than that no big accidents all weekend.

Adam helped put up tents along with Julia, Caleb, and John. In all, we had five tents.

The kids enjoyed digging in the dirt. Don't worry, we filled the whole back up before we left.
Saturday morning we walked over to the boat dock so that the kids could crab around the rocks.
Caleb also got this cool blue-belly lizard.

In our group there was a total of seventeen kids-- later there were nineteen kids.
Way up high above where our van was parked, a squirrel had a field day eating.
Saturday was the most perfect day at the coast! It was hot and sunny and just gorgeous! We couldn't have asked for a more perfect day at the beach! The water wasn't even that cold.
At first, Alex was so scared of the ocean, but he soon realized that we only expected him to get his feet wet! That silly boy!
Caleb enjoyed skim boarding.
Other kids enjoyed splashing in the water!
Adam threw back a huge snake-- just kidding--- it was a piece of seaweed!
Dennis had a blast at the beach! He played and played and played.

Julia enjoyed exploring, as did all of the other kids.
The boys played hide and go seek!

John sculpted a dolphin in the sand. Alex and Dennis were his helpers.
Annalyn had fun boogy-boarding! So did lots of the other kids!
My favorite thing was digging for clams! Between all of us, we must have found at least fifty before letting them go and watching them dig themselves back into the sand.

Adam had fun skim boarding too!

So did John!
One night we made s'mores! They were delicious!
Andrew was brave to sleep in a tent with just William!
The weekend was over before we knew it and we were soon back home.
Heading of to bed early just because my nice cozy bed sounds dreamy.
And I won't even post the picture of the mountain of clothes I have been working on ever since we got home. Good night.

Hi Christine,

I am so glad everything went so well for your 'Big Adventure'. It looks and sounds like you all had a good time. Great photos too! You are so brave to go camping and so lucky the weather was so good. I live in Canada and I can't tell you how many times I went caming with my children when they were young and how many times it rained!! My girls love camping to this day and so do their children. Give me a nice hotel with a pool and meals any day!!!Good for you all though.

Dear Christine,
You guys are awesome parents, and the joy of your weekend will make a memory for all. Isn't William your little fire bug? I don't think I could have resisted sympathizing with how much burns hurt but following up with a bit of nagging ("now you know why we freaked out about fires, since they hurt so much when they burn skin"). We had a son who set some paper on fire in the bathroom at age 5, and my heart still catches at the "what could have been" thoughts. He's 12 now, but I am sure we found several teaching moments to go back to the issue of why one doesn't start fires alone. However, I do sympathize with William, because even the smallest burns HURT! Sorry he had an accident, but overall the weekend looks like it was a dream. Here in Ohio we had frost today, so enjoy your sun!

Wow - that's all I can say. The weather! (It is getting cold here.) The time to be together (working for a church means working all weekend). The time away from school! (The kids sat in the corners of my office doing homework.....) Count yourself lucky, girl! Meanwhile I'll try not to be envious.

Sounds like great fun. You are so, so brave to attempt camping with your big family. I haven't taken mine camping since we had just two kids.

P.S. But I meant to add, it looks like a lot of fun! If only someone else would manage all the prep and clean up work for me. :)

It looks like you had so much fun this weekend. My family loves camping too. It is such a great way to have family time with no outside distractions like tv and video games. I'm sure it was a lot of work but it definitely looked worth all the work. Everyone looked so happy and like they really enjoyed themselves. I kind of wish you would have posted a picture of the mountain of laundry you had to do. After a recent 5 day vacation I had 6 loads of laundry to do for my family of six so I can only imagine what a weekends worth of laundry for you family must look like. I think seeing what your laundry pile looks like would make all of the rest of us thankful for the small amount we have to do in comparison. We definitely wouldn't be able to complain anymore. HAHA!! Good luck getting it all done!

You are braver than me. I have thought about camping several times but I have always chickened out. I love my bed and I hate bugs and would be scared someone would get my kids while I was asleep. I know I am ridiculous. Glad you had a great time. I wish I could muster up enough courage....maybe one day. :)

What a great weekend at the shore and not expensive as you could cook your meals. You had perfect weather and lots of fun memories.

Looks like you went with several other families.

It sounds like a wonderful trip-I wish it were still warm enough in SD for camping but we are making snowmen instead.
I was wondering how your daughter (anna-I think) is doing with her growth hormones? Cara

That really sounds like one fun trip! It will be treasured memories for all of you, that's for sure! Beautiful photos too! I can't believe how the beach with the high grass looks just like here! (In summer, that is; now it's around 5 degrees Celsius - not really beach weather :-) )

And finally, one small concern (not meaning to be critical at all). I got really worried when I saw how your taller children have no protection for their necks in the car. Is there a way you could add that? In case you would have an accident there's a great risk they will all end up with severe whiplash injuries :-( Please, would you mind checking it up? I would hate for your children to get hurt that way since it affects life so much and is really painful!
