Every little thing that Dennis learns is such a gift. I get all teary-eyed when I witness another one of Dennis's firsts. Just today, I noticed how Dennis was holding his spoon all fancy. It is just so darn cute to see this little boy who still can't help getting food all over his face, hold his spoon all prim and proper. What is even more amazing is that we didn't teach him to hold his spoon like this-- he sort of just followed suit.
And to think, just a year ago, Dennis barely knew what to do with a mashed banana spooned into his mouth.
On another note, the potty-training is going well but he is still not able to communicate with me when he has to go. Right now it is more of a timing thing---- I put him on the potty when he first wakes up and every half hour for about five minutes throughout the day. He is learning to save his pee-pee and poo-poo for the potty so that he can flush and wave it bye-bye. He sure gets a kick out of that. I am trying to teach him to tap the front of his crotch to indicate to me that he has to go pee-pee and to tap his bottom when he has to go poo-poo. I know that he understands the concept of it all--- we both just need a little more time.
Before I know it, my boy is going to be riding a bike and going to school!

My sons K class had the kids put one hand in the air, close the fist, poke the thumbthrough, and shake it. It is the sign for potty ! Maybe this would help !
there is such a huge differece that I am reading about Denis frmo when he came home until now!!
you are doing a fantastic JOB muM!
Simply amazing!
I am SO proud of him!! GO DENNIS!
Such good progress!!
Does Dennis' amniotic banding affect his facial muscles and thus his speech? I hadn't thought about it before, but you mentioning teaching him to show you when he needs to go to the bathroom made me wonder. Have you considered using formal sign language with him?
So cute!
Christine,
Just a suggestion here,
You could print off the photo of Dennis sitting on his potty, stick a magnet to it, then stick it to the side of the fridge, down low where Dennis can get a hold of it. He could indicate to you that he has to potty by showing/handing you the photo? Maybe he could make the connection to what you are having him communicate to you that way? You could introduce it by grabbing the photo and announcing the key phrase, ie "Dennis has to go potty" before you place him on the potty each time. I don't know for sure that this would work, but it was a thought that just came to me. Good luck with your potty training adventures!
I am constantly amazed at how well Dennis is doing. Love knows no bounds....
Way to go, Dennis! You are growing into a big boy! :)
I love that God opens our eyes to these beautiful miracles!!! He is cute! Hey, watch out when you teach them to say bye bye to the toilet. Oh yeah, Jason did this with Abigail...and yet I was the one in the store going to the toilet with her and she yelled it - in this public bathroom.....Glad there are stalls- I was a little red. Fond memories...
Wow..great work little man.
..
for toileting..we just use the toilet sign..which is a t.
Damien couldn't even do that..so he just used his hand and opend and closed it..and we showed him the "poop" sign..
even though he can now say it..he still uses the sign
♥ I'm still trying to teach my 5 year old son how to hold his spoon correctly!!! :)
It is so inspiring to read about Dennis' progress over the past year. Thanks for sharing these joyful moments with us. You are a beautiful person, Christine!
