Family Time

John has been quite busy at work. However, he manages to squeeze in family time whenever he can. A favorite thing to do in our house is to look at pictures and videos of our family-- Alex and Dennis especially get a kick out of it.

The best way to describe how close Dennis and Alex are is to just show you. Here Alex is happily sharing his Push-up with Dennis. Granted, we suggested it at first, but we never expected Alex to continue sharing with Dennis. It was cute how excited both of them were.

Alex has been having nosebleeds. I think it is from the dry air here, which is a huge contrast to the humidity he was used to in Ukraine. That is what woke him up the other day early from his nap. At first, I went into the bedroom, cleaned him up, put some Vaseline in his nose, and laid down with him in hopes that he would fall back asleep. Honestly, I was looking to see if he was okay with me trying to get him to fall back asleep which is a sign of trust---- and he was. As we laid together, I rubbed his forehead and whispered, "Ya lyublu tebya," to which he whispered back, "Fsegda?" This was so precious to me because I regularly tell him, "Ya lyublu tebya fsegda," which means, "I love you always." I answered, "Da, fsegda."
He went back to sleep for a little while longer. Once he got up, I took him down stairs and he began to play with Buzz. "Do you want to watch a movie with Buzz in it?" I asked him in my broken Russian. He excitedly answered yes, and while the movie was rewinding, I found Woody too, which really made him smile.
Before bed, we had some family couch time.
Playing peek-a-boo (to Alex it is called coo-coo)

Alex is doing so well....that interchange is precious and reminds me so much of Zhen and me. We have shared these little bit of "love talk" for years. Now he makes sure there are no other boys in the room, but he makes sure he shares his sweetness with me.

Christine - Are you using melatonin as a sleep aid for Alex? We were using it for my son and while it WAS working like a charm, we figured out the nosebleeds he was getting were from the melatonin. I didn't want to believe it was true but we ruled everything else out, did some research online, and apparently, nosebleeds are a side effect of melatonin for some individuals.

Sure enough, as soon as we cut out giving him melatonin, the nosebleeds stopped. :( Good thing for him...but also a bad thing because it is very difficult to get him to go to sleep. Studies have shown that children with autism have significantly lower levels of melatonin and I guess we hit the lottery on that one because Reiss is definitely not a good sleeper.

Now my daughter, on the other hand, does well with taking melatonin and we've not had any problems at all.

I myself woke up last night with a spontaneous nosebleed, so I've been googling it a bit today. Thought this was a pretty good summary, for kids:

Nosebleeds are common in children and often result from harmless activities such as your child picking their nose, blowing it too hard or getting knocked during play.

There are other causes of a nosebleed.
• Overly sensitive blood vessels which burst and bleed, usually in warm, dry weather.
• Infections in the nose, throat and sinuses.
• Common colds and flu.
• Allergies, such as dust mite allergy or hay fever.
• Blowing the nose too often.
• Child pushing something up their nose, such as a small bead.
• Excessive straining, which can happen with constipation.
• Certain medications, such as anti-inflammatory medicines or nose sprays

I never would have thought constipation in a kid could cause a nosebleed! I learn something new everyday. Still don't know what caused mine, though...

Crap Christine, quit acting like you can speak Russian. You know maybe 4-8 sentences.
You are going broke feeding those kids. Wait till they are teenagers and driving, getting pregnant getting in trouble with the law. And don't say "That won't happen" because out of 12 kids it will happen.
Your neighbors are sick and tired of all those kids!
