As for me, I prefer to float.
One summer a few of my kids regressed--- their test scores were lower when they first went back to school. So I decided to work with my kids a little everyday throughout the summer. Jonny can now count money and tell time, Sveta is finally understanding word problems, and Rachel is expanding her vocabulary with words like instinctively and burrows. Anna, Annalyn, and Julia are keeping their mind sharp with long division. William is doing a variety of work and while he is very bright, I found it interesting that he got easily frustrated when I had him do a worksheet where numbers had letters and he had to match up the number to the space with the same number and write in the letter so that he could spell out a message. This was incredibly hard for him compared to long math problems.
Sveta still cannot count money and she can only tell time to the hour. I have read that children with FAS (Fetal ALcohol Syndrome) have a very hard time learning these concepts and so far she has not learned to do either. Since they are on her IEP for next year, I think I will hold off and maybe just reintroduce her the names of the coins and their values.
Here is Dennis, William, and Andrew having fun on the swings! If you could only see how Dennis tags along and tries to do everything his older brothers do.
How are you spending your summer?

Fun! We have been going to the park, down to the river to swim, to the library for books, playing board games and playing with the dogs. And a lot of reading! I am glad you are having so much fun as a family.
My son graduated from high school yesterday! So now we can relax swim in our pool and hang out with friends.(I get in the pool with them too a few times a week!)
Fun!
My kids are still in school (only three more days: Sunday to Tuesday) so we just have the afternoons to hang out. About twice a week someone takes them to the beach in Tel Aviv, and then on the 3rd they will be off to visit in Fullerton and Tustin, CA! But till then we have an elementary school graduation and a gan graduation, a piano recital and a Krav Maga parents' night, not to mention that we just had a great big birthday party for the twins yesterday!
great pictures.
Here it is still school for 2 weeks. And then we will spent 1 week packing and cleaning the house and then off to Switzerland for 3 weeks.
For the netherlands the weather has been great this week, so we played with water and did some swimming. only 21 days and we will be in Switzerland
Oooh, I love that you're doing some little bits with the kids over the summer, such a great idea! :-)

My job starts monday! I work at a special needs summer camp and I LOVE it. I've missed my campers and I can't wait to see how they've grown and progressed!
We're doing "school" every day over the summer too. The boys need a little extra work for this upcoming year. :) Plus it makes them appreciate school more, knowing they don't have me as their teacher every day! LOL
Looks like a lot of fun. Although I am more of a floater myself... just relaxing and cooling off.
Playing in the water is always a great summer thing to do. :-)
Hey, about Sveta and counting change...Try getting a talking cash register that identifies the coins when you put them in. Our youngest has one and has learned without stress this way. You put in the dime and it will say, "Dime, ten cents" and then repeat again. It will keep a running tally and even teaches how to use coupons and *gasp* credit cards. If you don't pay it off, it will tell you you've overextended your credit. Just a thought. Let me know if you try it.
Your friend and fan,
Jen
P.S. Keeping the mind active over the summer months really does help ease back into schooling in the fall. It generally takes a month to get students back on track after break. I always appreciated the parents who interactively and creatively kept the process going over summer break. Way to be Christine!!
I love Annalyn's tan...wish my skin tanned like that. :)
Looks fun! We have a pool too, but haven't used it a lot yet this season. We got a lot of rain and our deck needed to be re stained. We finished that this morning, yeah! We have a family vacation scheduled in the Outer Banks, NC in 2 weeks. Aside from that vacation, the kids have a week of Wilderness Camp in PA and Steven will be taking a pottery class for a couple of weeks in August.
I will admit...I'm coveting your pool! We are hoping to put one in in a few years. For now we make the 25 mile trek in town to go, it's a real pain but fun once we get there. Just hauling all the stuff for the 6 littles is daunting! Seeing your kids in your pool makes me KNOW that I must have one! LOL!
Oh, I envy you having a pool right now! We used to have one, but then we moved...looks like fun! You're kids are lucky; I only got out of school 3 days ago!
Our schools don't finish until the middle of July so I'm still not geared up for the holidays yet! We have six weeks off school which is just long enough to be a really really good break without being long enough to forget too much thankfully.
So, we're spending a week at a big Christian Conference/Camp (new-wine), a week camping with other families of children with special needs, and a week at Guide Camp (Girl Scouts). In between that we'll be scheduling hospital appointments and therapies and carrying on with normal life plus hopefully the odd day out here and there.

We are working on getting math facts down to be able to pass time tests and on money. I posted about it last week on the casselcrew blog.
Oh my gosh, what a beautiful pool you have. Great pictures. Love how little Dennis tags along with his brothers.
..
Our summer vacation has just begun. The first day, (Thursday) we went to Zooz and got stuck in the downpour. Friday was very difficult for Joey..(transition from school to no school) I took all the kids to Cheeky Monkeys, but he was so very aggressive. Today was better. I keep them busy with outdoor play on nice days, we have quiet time and then outdoor play..
Joey starts camp on July 6 and Damien begins his Ready for School program on June 3oth. Nick graduated with honours and is working, Alec is still looking for a job. It will be a very very very busy summer with us.
Hi Christine,
Your posts are so entertaining! My name is Erin, and I am a college student with mild cerebral palsy. I’m a special education major and have hopes of becoming a disability services director of a university after graduate school. I have just launched a blog that is still getting started, but with the title “Empowering People and Changing Lives,” I hope that it will provide a wealth of resources for people who care for children, specifically those who are affected by disability. I will also be chronicling some personal experiences and will be sharing some thoughts about those along the way. Your blog has also been included in my blogroll, so I hope that together, we are able to collaborate to provide resources to those who are in similar situations. The blog’s address is http://empowerpeoplechangelives.blogspot.com. From there, you will be able to read the posts I have written, find out all about me, check out my blogroll, eventually look at many resources I have gathered, and contact me.
Look forward to reading many more of your posts! Happy blogging!
I love floating my kids always try to climb on me and make me sink though. Kaitlyn's reading is slightly down so we are reading a lot. I used your idea about doing chores for a surprise like you did when you gave your girls socks I think it was. Kaitlyn loved it. I usually ask her to read for 20 minutes a day, so I told if she read 40 minutes there would be a surprise.
hi there :)
I'm sure you know this, but I just wanted to offer my 2 cents (speaking of counting money!). When I taught a money unit to 7th and 8th graders (kids at coin identification stage and kids at the giving change stage), I found it to be the most beneficial to - whenever possible - use real coins/bills. Papers with coin drawings have a tendency to be very confusing until a child really has the concept down pat. It can also work to cover each coin with the real thing - hitting tactile and visual learning :) and honestly? sometimes *I* even have trouble seeing the difference between the coins on a photocopied sheet!!!
www.moneyinstructor.com is a GREAT website for math resources - I found great money math worksheets. Unfortunately you do have to pay for the full features, but they do have good previews.
hope that helps!
