I Was Told the Day Would Come

It is official! My kids are eating like teenagers---- finally, and I can't seem to keep enough junk food in the house. I still buy 99% of things on sale, but I am so tempted to just be a mean Mom and cut out all of the extras. I mean, why in the heck do they have to have PopTarts (8 for $.98) with milk or brownies and bananas? They don't order me to buy them, but for some reason I just buy them. And I don't even know why. Instead, I think I'll serve up bowls of white rice for their after-school snack tomorrow for a nice change. Cheap and filling----- I'm seriously doing this tomorrow.
I offered Rachel $5 and a trip to Dollartree if she organized my pantry. "Mom, are we going to get another pantry?" A part of me wishes I could have a bigger pantry but I know that I don't need one----- and I really should work on being content with all the "stuff" that I already have.

Rachel knew how bad William was wanting to go to Dollartree so she offered to split the money with him if he helped her.

They worked great together and finished the job in no time!

When I went to put something away long after they were done, she came up behind me and gently chastised me for putting something away in the wrong place. "Mom, those don't go there, they go here."

That made me smile to see how invested she was in keeping this pantry organized.

What a great sister to share the windfall with her brother like that. Go Rachel!
When my son started eating us out of house and home I made sure we had heaps of dried pasta in the pantry and some bottles of readymade bolognaise sauce, etc. He never went hungry and we never went bankrupt.

Great Job!
Can they do my pantry next? It's on my to-do list but not very high up. It stayed organised for so long (like nearly 12 months, longer than anything else in my house) then in a couple of weeks it just turned into chaos in a cupboard. I like my pantry to be easy to use, I like to be in and out quickly so the little hands don't start grabbing things and begging for me to make all the puddings and jelly that is supposed to be stashed right at the back.

White rice just doesn't cut it as an after school snack. How about oatmeal cookies (homemade) or fruit?

The kids did a good job on the pantry.

We LOVE rice!

We have beans and rice as a side dish with every meal.

We have a 10 cup rice cooker that is always running and ready. A yummy way to eat it is w/hot sauce, olive oil, salt, and a little shredded lettuce on top. Our Ghanaian Children taught us that.

We are blessed w/ a huge pantry..but I would trade it in a second for your awesome pool!

I don't know Tina - my kids will chow down on some white rice! :D It's comfort food. I buy it by the 10lb bags, and when I make some for dinner, I always make extra for leftovers.

I love an organized pantry! I gave up on it when the kids were little and insisted on helping put away groceries... I was happy that cans god into the cabinet! Good job Rachel and William!

I make rice for a snack but I make it into homemade rice pudding....economical and tasty!

My kids wouldn't know what to do with all that food! My boys eat so much, I NEVER can keep the pantry full!! If I do fill it up, it really, really goes quickly, so I just buy what we need as we need it, and it keeps them from pigging out (one of the boys has an issue with stealing food and hiding it in his bed and gorging on it). Still, I'd love to have a big pantry, organized or not!! :o)

My oldest son loves rice- it's a favourite after school snack!!-
If I get fast food for my younger
son- I then go and buy chicken on
rice for my older guy!!
I know what you mean about having teens- they eat so much! My 17yr
old always says- I'm really hungry what can I eat?
Where do they put it? They barely
have any fat- me on the other hand...
I wish Rachel could come and clean my pantry- it looks so organized!
Great Job!

We're a white rice family here too! I grew up having rice w/milk, cinnamon and sugar on it...mmmmmmm love that stuff! I used to make rice pudding all the time too! But, sadly, Angela does not like white rice like the rest of us do! She likes brown rice with a little brown sugar and milk. Ok, this is WAY better for her too. LOL

I already feel like this....my kids would eat ALL the time.... I only have 1 teen ...but the boys 10 and 9 are hungry all the time. I don't know how you afford to keep the pantry full... you always do a great job.

I love that Rachel and William worked together... Rachel just seems so sweet... I know she is a blessing to your family!

P.S. I think the rice is a great idea:)

GREAT idea "hiring" Rachel to organize your pantry. I'm going to do this with Julia next week when she's out of school!

I think that's nice to give them a little money when they do something above and beyond...and that she shared is so very nice. My husband actually organized our pantry closet last week, and he looked in there yesterday in dismay...WHAT happened? He expected it to stay that way!! ha. Our kids eat us out of house and home too, as my mother used to say. It is like magic the way things disapear. Most mornings, I make plates and plates of bagels or raising toast, to make sure the bigger kids eat something. This morning, we are out of bagels, so I toasted 26 slices of white bread and put cinnamon and sugar on it...it disapeared! I would love to have enough fruit to always give them that after school...but it goes fast after grocery day.

I love the rice idea....it is one of my favorite side dishes. I like the pasta idea too. The dietitian in me has to say brown rice and whole grain pasta but both of those have come down in price so much over the years that it has to be more economical that pop-tarts! :) I did the butter and sugar thing on rice as a kid too!

I have a friend who makes little pizza's out of canned biscuits. Kroger here always has cans for a dollar...that would at least feed 10 of your kids! ;)

Love the pantry! :)

We go through way too much snack food too, and we "only" have 5 smaller mouths!
What I found to work was making muffins, quick breads (banana, zucchini), and cereal bars. They are healthier, cheaper, and fill up the bellies better.
Oh, and apples. We buy them by the box. My 14yo eats 6-8 each day, when we let him!

Great idea! I think your pantry is pretty well stocked!

Maybe popcorn - if you get an airpopper and pop the popcorn yourself, it's cheaper and almost as quick as the store-bought stuff! My sister and I used to make popcorn a lot for our afternoon snack.

Ilya will decide to deep clean for me without prompting - from me at least. I fear his prompting is horror at the way things are. He cleaned out the deep cabinets above the refrigerator yesterday.... I think I haven't done that for ten years. (Embarrassed to say.)

My girls re organized my pantry as a surprise. I couldn't find anything. LOL

I love pantries.

When we had 4 teenage boys in our house, we used to keep baked potatoes ready to reheat, tortillas with butter and salsa, and steamed rice in a rice cooker. We also kept nuts, sunflower seeds, fruit and sometimes little debbie snacks. :)
As long as they could stuff it in their mouth, it worked.

My friend makes bean and cheese soft tacos and freezes them so her kids can microwave them for snacks.

I really admire how well you parent 11 kids! I'm losing my mind with one 13 month old. You're doing great!

Let me know how the whole rice as an afternoon snack goes. I think my kids would rebel but it might be worth a shot!

White rice for an after school snack? That's no snack in my opinion. I think Tina had a great idea of making some rice pudding with the rice. :)Popcorn is pretty cheap and I think it's a great snack too.

As a mother of three teerns I feel your pain. I spent $60.00 at the farmers market buying fruit yesterday and half of it is gone already. I am happy they like to eat healthy though.

Great little helper you have there. How wonderful for you.

Julie
