To Study or to Strip...... that is the question

Dennis is such a chunk of love. Rachel and I love to squeeze his fat! Since July 2008, Dennis has gained almost 10 pounds! And have I mentioned how tall he is getting?

He loves to eat little pieces of crushed ice, just like his sisters taught him to. Here he is enjoying a cupful of ice as he lounges on the couch.

We have a routine in our home. As soon as the kids get home from school, it is homework time. Not play time, not snack time, not watch tv time...... but homework time. We had tried evening homework and it was a disaster--- with whiny, tired kids not wanting to refocus on schoolwork after playing outside. I think this works for us because the kids come home and before they have a chance to get out of school mode, they focus on their homework and get it done----- looking forward to the snack that they will get halfway through their homework. It has become a routine---- for many years now, and it works great!

Without even asking (or bribing), Adam will help Rachel with her math homework now. This is huge since Adam used to loathe any kind of tutoring. We kept encouraging him that by helping his siblings, it was preparing him for a possible job in high school and college as a tutor. We kept telling him that we knew he had the potential to be a great teacher. I also promised him a few Oreos, or a candy bar, or a few bucks if he successfully got his sister to understand her homework. I'm not sure what worked-- maybe it was a combination, but it is no longer like pulling teeth to get him to help. Praise God.

Dennis is 2 1/2 years old now. That means he thinks he can dress himself, take off his shoes, help himself to snacks in the pantry, buckle his own carseat, brush his own teeth, and pull down his pants whenever he feels like it.

He has a really cute act of "stripping", sometimes losing his balance and stumbling to the floor where he will continue to take his pants off with his feet straight in the air.

Last night some of the kids went to church while a few stayed home and studied or swam in the 77 degree pool. Poor Jonny kept opening his eyes under water and "burned" them. I had to put drops in them just to get him to stop crying--- but boy, did his eyes look puffy for the rest of the night.
It didn't stop him from playing with Dennis however, and I ended up helping them build block towers. My Rachelita studied for her social studies test. She has improved her study habits so much this year..... I am so proud of her. I think I need to remind her more often of what a great job I think she is doing.

I felt incredibly lazy last night. earlier in the day, Jonny, Dennis and I washed my van and cleaned off the driveway--- I guess it wiped me out.

It is so nice to be able to just lazily lay around and watch your kids play.

After Daddy read with Andrew, the younger boys gathered around him to hang out.
They love to talk with their Daddy..... especially when he plays "Happy Birthday" on the accordion.

A solution to using chemicals in your pool is an ionizer. We have one in our pool and it is great. It is like swimming in a lake. You also save a lot of money on chemicals. Here is a link to one on ebay if you are interested. http://cgi.ebay.com/A-750-Eliminate-Chlorine-in-Pool-Spa-Hot-Tub-Ionizer_W0QQitemZ140316183280QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLH_DefaultDomain_2?hash=item140316183280&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=66:2|65:1|39:1|240:1318|301:1|293:1|294:50

Hi Christine. Dang, that Dennis even looks cute with his pants down, LOL. (Okay, that didn't sound right... but you know what I mean.) Shay, my 2-1/2yo is very independent too, wanting to do all those same things you mentioned that Dennis is wanting to do. I think it's great. I just lay Shay's clothes out for him and he puts them all on without help, most of the time.

I have a question. Do you let your kids play video games? I don't remember ever seeing a pic of one of your kids playing one. I only ask because we bought our kids Nintendo DS's to play only in the car on long trips--but I have become lazy about it and I am constantly seeing them with one in their hand. We also have a Wii. I originally bought it only for me for the exercise program. Well, in a moment of weakness (a few moments actually,) I picked up a game or two for them. And now they are constantly asking if they could play the DS, the Wii, or the computer. I am so sorry I did this. Now.. to take them away would be devastating. I guess I need to really set some limits.

LOL.... what a little chunk that Dennis is!

I am going to do a math marathon today with the girls. Maybe a butter-finger is in order to encourage me. :)

Love the Pic of John, sort of on the couch with the accordian. :)

Great post. Love the pictures.
My children also do homework after school..but they prefer that way. Well only my two oldest actually have homework. Nick is very dilligent whereas Alec needs more of a boost.
Dennis is doing so wonderful. He and Abby are the same age. She does the same things and loves to strip.
xo
have a super day

We have the same rules about homework that you have- for the same reason... nobody wants to do anything later in the evening and it is so miserable for everyone.

I love it when my kids help each other with homework too!

You definitely deserve to relax from time to time... but I would not call it being lazy... I have a feeling you are far from lazy! :)

Tell Adam that my daughter made very good money tutoring French and Spanish in high school.

I've tried just about everything and doing homework right after school is the only thing that works for us too.

I'm curious...how do you handle access to the pantry/snacks...we recently went from one to four children and I'm having to regulate things more.

Once again, I love all the pictures! I keep wondering what the caretakers at the orphanage will think of Dennis when they see him. He's such a little cutie pie!

Yeah Rachel, for the good study habits, and Adam for being such a great big brother! It will pay off for both of you.

Dennis is such a doll!

THis may sound REALLY weird but, I promise it works! If the kids get "burning eyes" from swimming, put a couple drops of milk in them. It takes the sting out. I did this ALL the time in High School when I had leaky goggles ( I was on the swim team) and I do it from time to time now when I am teaching very young kids to swim and showing them it's ok to put their face in the water without goggles, or if I forget my goggles and need to show kids a skill without running into a wall! (I teach swimming lessons at our local pool)

all right.... I'm betting you've been asked this before... have you ever considered (or been asked) to do a reality show like the Duggars? Frankly, I'd find yours much more compelling (I don't watch reality TV as a rule, came to find it disturbing somehow). On that note, I'd imagine it would be harmful to kids to do this sort of thing on a constant basis - ruin the peace/harmony of your family, you know? But a one time documentary of sorts would be interesting and less "stressful". Any proceeds would be well deserved on your part.

just wondered :)
