He's Home!

Dennis is home!
*************************************
Wednesday morning I got a call asking if the surgery could be moved up. I said sure, and left 40 minutes earlier than originally planned. They rushed us through admissions.

Here we are on our way to day surgery. Dennis loved riding in the wagon.

Everything was cleared for him to have surgery and while we waited for the Anaesthesiologist to come, Dennis played in the toy car.

After his cocktail of Tylenol and Versed, I thought he was too intoxicated to drive, so I held him instead.

At 9:40 am, I handed him off to the surgery nurse that would be attending the operation. I had no idea what to expect at that point, so all I could do was trust in the Lord..... and wait.

I got hourly updates, and at 3:15 pm, the surgeon came out and said he was done.

I got to see my little guy a while later after they got his vomiting under control.

When I saw him, I cried tears of joy! The large open eye was gone!

This surgery was very hard on Dennis so the surgeon decided to wait until March 24 to do the other side of his face. They prepared me for the possibility that he may have needed a blood transfusion, but all of those prayers took care of that!

Once his SATs stayed above 95, they wheeled us to a room. I had them exchange his crib for a bed where I could lay next to him for the rest of our visit.

The area that is covered by a sponge would not close because there was not enough skin, so they took a skin graft from behind his right ear. This sponge will be changed during his next surgery in three weeks.

Dennis was in a lot of pain so I had the doctor change his prescription so that he could receive Morphine every two hours instead of every four. He slept through the night next to me, and I woke up as the surgeon gently tapped my shoulder. I asked all of my questions...... and the outlook is pretty darn good. He thinks Dennis' eye will eventually support a glass eye. Praise the Lord!

Dennis finally ate something this morning and we were discharged by 9:40am.

I think he looks pretty fantastic for just having major surgery. Don't you?
Thank you for all of your prayers. They were answered....... just look at him!
*************************************************
On another note, please pray for Adam and our whole house........... he has the chicken pox. And what is most boggling is that he had the varicella vaccine as a baby and broke out with a mild case back then.

I am so happy that Dennis is home and that his surgery went so well.

About the chicken pox...Here in our state we have had many outbreaks in the school. Even though all the kids have been vaccinated. We are now required to do a booster. The Dr. told me that new studies have determined that either the virus has mutated or the vaccine wears off. Either way a booster is needed.

Wow I can't believe you're already home. I'm so sorry I missed you. Dennis is sure a tough little guy, I'm so glad he handled everything well. I will definitely meet up with you at his next surgery.

Poor Adam and the chicken pox ... I had it at 19 and it was terrible. Will keep y'all in my prayers.

Leah said...

Hooray for Dennis! I can't wait to see how everything looks once the swelling goes down. I have to say though, I got used to how his eye looked before! Anyway, I'm so glad God got him through this so well! As for the chicken pox, if you google NEWS Chicken Pox with District 196, you'll find there is an epidemic in our school district. As of 2 days ago, in one school there are 30 cases, and 29 of those kids had been vaccinated, but they were not yet old enough for the 2nd dose. (it's required for 7th grade, so these kids had a couple years left yet.) My daughter's middle school is at record numbers too. Angela had whooping cough early this winter, and she'd just had her booster in June!

Dennis looks great! What a change
in one operation-

I hope Adam feels better- I always
wondered about the chicken pox
vaccine- I thought this would happen and kids would get the chicken pox at an older age when the vaccine wore off! My kids had the cpox right before the vaccine was available-

I hope everyone feels better soon!

Oh, Christine, he looks tremendous! Weeping here. Thank you, Lord. Your surgeon is an artist, really--it's a fantastic job and it's wonderful to see Dennis looking so alert and happy so soon after surgery.

Oh, Christine. He looks soooooo good. Isn't it amazing what surgeons can do?!? Poor Adam. Has Dennis had the vaccine or the pox? Sure hope so. Poor guy that would be the last thing he needs.

So thrilled for Dennis!

WOW! Dennis looks great! I'm sooooo happy for him! You are a brave and loving mom to go ahead with his surgery despite the concern you must have felt for the temporary pain he is now feeling. He is very lucky to have such a selfless mom. I am praying for his speedy full recovery! What an exciting time for him.
My sister had a mild case of chicken pox when she was a toddler, so when she was 19 she thought she was safe to be around my kids at Christmas one year when they were covered. Not long after that SHE was covered with a severe case! I feel for you Adam! Try not to scratch the pox on your handsome face.

I hope Dennis does not develop the chicken pox! He is dealing with enough right now.

Prayers for healing and good health for all in the Reed family!

TylerandBrianne said...

He looks wonderful!!! I am so glad everything turned out great. I believe that the varicella vaccine is a crock. My sister in law said that due to the vaccine she has seen a lot of kids with shingles. I believe shingles is MUCH worse than having chicken pox. I have had both.

Violet said...

Praise God Dennis is doing so well!

Ugh! Poor Adam! My friends kids both had the chicken pox vaccine and both got it just a few years later... She did not vaccinate her younger kids... I will pray he heals fast and no one else manages to catch it, at least not terribly bad and especially not Dennis!

Thank you for updating us!!!

I am so thankful that Dennis's surgery went so well - and can't believe he's already home! Amazing! His face looks great, and will no doubt look even better once the swelling, etc. is gone. I do hope that the pain can be kept under control and that Dennis - and you, and the rest of your family - will have a peaceful, restful, and restorative night.

Oh, poor Adam! I hope he doesn't have too hard a time, and that the rest of your children (especially Dennis) will remain pox-free. No fun at all, and hardly good timing, is it?

I will let my church's prayer list group know that Dennis's surgery was successful and offer prayers of gratitude for him...

Blessings,

What a little trooper to be home already. I thought of him so often while waiting to read your blog after the surgery. I hope he is not in pain and that his recovery is speedy.

Poor Adam. I sure hope it doesn't spread through the house - especially to Dennis! It's too late to have Adam go anywhere as the time when it spreads already has happened.

When my daughter got them (age 15), she caught them from a camper at the day camp where she was a jr. counselor. She was COVERED with them.

Watch for a package for Dennis in the mail.

Praise God!! Thank you Jesus for answering prayers.

In regards to the chicken pox....I have two teenage boys - both of which had the vaccine too. The older has now had chicken pox twice, and the younger has had them 3 times!! After the 3rd time, I was told that kids about this age that received the vaccine, because it was still fairly new at that time, all should've have gotten a booster around 10yrs later, otherwise it pretty much wore off. (Hence why my teens got it again). I just don't know why noone ever told me that.
Anyway...please be careful with that. Hopefully Dennis won't get them.

Will continue to pray. You said that another surgery is March 24th already??

Lisa said...

So glad that the surgery went well :) I am happy to hear that the surgeon is so positive about Dennis' outcome!!

Sorry to hear that Adam got the chicken pox.. even after the shots... how mean is that?? Hopefully having had the shots will mean he only gets a very mild case. I heard that the live vaccine is only about 75-80% effective, but if that means very few actually get it, and only get a weakened case, then I'm happy my kids got the shots (even if they are not so happy to have received them!)
