A Few Days Later

The kids have been helping with the meal preparations more and more. Now that they are older, not only have they expressed an interest, but I think it is time that they learn the basics. One of the simple things I think the kids should know how to make is spaghetti.

So Caleb fried up the ground beef for me and learned how to drain the fat.

Adam and Rachel are both thirteen. While they are two complete opposites, I am blessed with a little treat every now and them---- seeing the two hanging out together just because.

As a Mom, I think that is cool.

Dennis is back to his old self. I kid you not, he is back out riding his push car, swinging in his chair, and insisting that if his siblings could go swimming, he could too!

So, I allowed him to get his feet wet and thankfully he didn't push for more.
I think it was a little too cold for him.

But Sveta----- she wants to swim everyday despite the freezing temperatures and is disappointed when the sun isn't out. She knows that if the sun is not shining I will not let her swim. Since she can't understand temperatures yet because of fetal alcohol syndrome, this helps her to gage on her own when swimming is appropriate.

Now that Dennis has been home a few days and is up and running around, I have been able to take a much better look at what the surgeon actually did. Not only did he he get rid of alot of the scar tissue that ran across his face from the amniotic banding, but he also raised his left ear and got rid of the huge scar patch that was behind his ear. The scar's diameter was 2 inches and prevented any hair growth in that area. Now it looks like he will have a fairly normal hairline and his ears will be even when he wears glasses. In the future the surgeon will operate to cup this ear so that it is like the other one. This will likely be one of his last reconstructive surgeries, or so I hope, when they fine tune everything else.

This picture definitely says it all!
This little boys personality is one in a million----- no gazillion!

Oh my goodness! These past 2 surgeries for Dennis have made SUCH a difference in his appearance! He almost looks like a different boy! I'm sure you'll miss the original smile that you loved, but wow, this new smile is amazing, and is going to make some things in life so much easier for him. I just love Dennis! Really, I love all your kids, but I first came to your blog because of Dennis so he's my "first love" here. LOL Your girls are so inspiring to me, especially when I'm raising my only girl who's turning 13 soon! You've given me lots of ideas of things to start doing with her and talk to her about that I hadn't thought of! (hey, I raised 4 boys, this girl thing is new to me! LOL) Many hugs to all your kids today.

You can really see the changes after this most recent round of surgery. Is it hard to see that little face you fell in love with changing? I know you are happy for him, as it's for the better, but is it hard too?

When I was little, I would ask my parents if we could go to the beach even in the winter time with snow on the ground, if the sun was shining. :)

I never even noticed that Dennis's ears weren't "even. He's such a cutie pie. You guys sure are doing a great job "fattening" him up. I just want to pinch those little cheeks!

Chunky cheeks, beautiful smile, brilliant blue eye, who could possibly notice uneven ears. You guys are just so blessed to have such an outgoing boy, you can literally see his sweet spirit shining out of him.

Sveta probably loves swimming as much as my Autumn does because it provides them with sensory input over their entire body! I wish we had a pool!!!

Wow It is amazing what modern medicine can do this day in time.
His appearance is so different!

That boy is just down right adorable no matter what and I bet he has everyone wrapped right around his little finger!

He does have an infectious smile!

No one will be going outdoor swimming here for another couple of months whether the sun shines or not. Pool covers usually come off around Memorial Day and even then the water is still "freezing" but at least it isn't one solid chunk. ;)

I just want to say I so enjoy your blog. Dennis is such a cutie pie and I am so thankful he is recovering so quickly! To God be the glory!

I can't believe the difference the last two surgeries have made, though my day care kids have always called Dennis "that cute baby". They keep asking when he's coming over to play so if you're ever in Wyoming, Dennis has a play date. Tracy

Dennis looks great! I look so forward to hearing about your family and seeing pictures.
I can't wait until we can use our pool. Most likely we will take our cover off some time in May. The weather is almost 60 and very sunny here today. I think it's beautiful!

He is so handsome! Not that he wasn't before, he definitely was, but his smile now is just toooooo cute! You can seem to get the "full" benefit of his chubby cheeks with the repair of the scar. I never noticed his ears, but I'm sure it will make wearing glasses that much easier now. It's amazing what God can do using the doctors hands! I'm so glad he is feeling well and is back to his old self!

The sun explanation is very good for Sveta, it gives her something concrete to focus on. Some kids just LOVE being in water, my 11 yo son is like that. It's too bad we can't have a big pool (no room), so he has to wait to go to friends or for us to bring him to the lake, he's not allowed to go down by himself. He surely is my water baby :oD .

Wow! Look at that sweet face! :)

Little children heal so quickly - that is a blessing in itself. Praying for your family. Your article on lies on your daughter rings a bell with me and my son as well. Ahh those parental challenges that grow us.

Dennis has the most amazing smile! Is he starting to talk more now that his lips have changed shape?

I love the shot of Adam and Rachel . . . it`s great when siblings get along like that. . . even if only for a few minutes. :)

Today I had the joy of meeting a family with 10 kids (8 boys!) who recently moved here to Guatemala. I instantly thought of your family when I saw them all running around and happy. It was a wonderful visit and my sons had a chance to hang out with some other boys and just be rowdy kids.

What a treasure your little Dennis is! The surgeries went so well! And I have to say that even only seeing pictures of him, it's clear as a bell that his personality is one in a gazillion!!!

Do they expect Dennis' teeth to come through straight when he gets his permanent teeth, or will he need braces. I'm always amazed at what they can do with teeth.

All your kids are just amazing--each in their own way. Dennis is looking so much better in such a short time! What a blessing your family is--I enjoy reading your posts.

Is Dennis pretty good about staying away from the pool when he is outside playing? Or is one person always incharge of him?

Annie said...

Oh, my gosh! Look at that smile.

Wow! Dennis looks great! (not that he didn't before--but that grin now!) Irresistable!
