It's Warming up!

Here are pictures from all last week.

Rachel's homework is getting harder and harder---- almost to the point of being over my head. I think that is pretty amazing for Rachel and shows just how far she has come in the twenty-one months she has been with us.

I love my Shark Steam Mop! So does Jonny! He begged for me to let him help.

One morning Jonny and I had an Uno marathon. We must have played at least nine games!

Caleb really loves basketball. John and Caleb will play quick games whenever they get the chance. Dennis is ready to play too! First, I had to go get his goggles!

The weather is warming up and the kids have been taking advantage of it while they can. Andrew loves roller-skating around the cul-de-sac.

Julia has been busy making scarfs, bib, and dishcloths to raise money for her trip to Ukraine with us when we adopt Alexsey! She has officially earned $123.00 and with her own $50.00 that makes a whopping $173.00 so far! Pretty awesome! One order was for a whole dozen washcloths! It's not too late to place an order! Julia made me a dishcloth and I love it!

The Atkin's diet is going well! John has decided to join me and wanted to make sure that I clarified something. On my last post, I said I felt fat. He in no way has ever made me feel this way-- in fact he always tells me how much he loves my body, but it is me who noticed the extra weight because my clothes hardly fit. Actually, we have both put on weight together, and so we are going to take it off together. He has went without Pepsi all day----- which is amazing for him!
For lunch today, I made this delicious and filling stuffed pasillo chile. If you are going to do Atkin's, I learned that you can't be lazy in the kitchen and you have got to be creative so you don't get burnt out on the same ol' food.
I took two of the chiles and baked them in the oven till soft. While they were baking, I fried up three ounces of sausage and scrambled four eggs. Once the chiles were soft, I cut out the stem and seeds, and slit the chile down one side. I opened it up and filled the inside with the egg and sausage and topped each one with 1/2 ounce of jack cheese.
It was so good!
For a snack, I made ham roll-ups stuggd with cream cheese, tomato, and green onion. Very yummy! And don't forget that glass of water!
And congrats to all who have decided to join me! I hope you make your goal!

Not wanting to come across negatively, just curious about it you have ever dicussed the desire to lose weight with your doctor. I personally cringe at the Atkins diet... you said Atkins is a "no carb" diet right? I took a college Nutrition class a few years ago and the dietition (who had a PH.D. in Nutrition) was VERY anti Atkins...part of this is because carbs are essential for normal body functioning, at least healthy carbs such as WHOLE grain breads (instead of white)... even starches such as potatoes are beneficial in moderation. Actually after taking her class I did 5 things that helped me lose weight... I cut out ice cream except for on very special occasions, I cut out soda completely, I switched from white bread and whole milk to whole grain bread and 2% milk, and I started walking 30 minutes 5 times a week.

I realize you have said this diet HAS worked for you but, one of the biggest complaints about it is that it doesn't train you to live a better long term life style and people often gain again once they stop the "diet". I know I often struggle with portion control more than anything. I also heard ( but do NOT know if it is true) that Dr. ATkins actually had a heart attack. Hmmm....

Just wondering!

Good luck with the weight loss program. My DH and have done something similar - South Beach. Dieting is no fun, but that is nice that you are doing it together.

That's funny . I guess, Johnny still hasn't had enough Uno. He and Sveta and Grandma just finished an epic marathon here at Grandma's house

Lol that mop does look like quite a lot of fun! I'd want to use it too!

As for the diet, I don't know much about it, but if it feels "do-able" and works, for you, I see no reason why you shouldn't give it a shot! :)

To the previous comment made by "Violet": Violet, please do your homework regarding Dr. Robert Atkins, the Atkins diet, and low-carb dieting. Atkins is not a NO carb diet, it is low carb. It can be very healthy if done right. Also, the Atkins diet does train people to treat it like a lifestyle change, not a diet. Your comment about people gaining weight back once they stop a "diet" is true of any diet - not just a low-carb diet. Also, Dr. Atkins died of a fall - not a heart attack. Seriously, girl, you need to do some research before you go making comments such as the ones you made here.

Christine -
I am glad to see you are doing the Atkins diet in a healthy way and including plenty of veggies. Too many people always think low-carb diets are unhealthy because they do not do their homework and think low carb = meat, eggs, and cheese only, as is obvious already by a previous comment made on this post. Congratulations to you! I hope you do well. I lost close to SEVENTY pounds four years ago doing a low-carb diet and have kept most of it off. I used my own tweaked version of Atkins and South Beach. I could stand to lose about fifteen pounds again but I blame it on kids and having not gone to the gym. ;)

Good Luck to you. My husband and I are getting healthier together also. It makes it a little easier to have such a great partner. We are counting calories I get 1300 and he gets 1500, so far I have lost 19 and he has lost 10. Good Luck.

I know how you feel with Rachel's homework. Leticia's is starting to scare me. But we are lucky as Hamish's dad is a retired teacher/principal and his mum is a librarian. So we always ask them when we are stuck on something.

William loves to play UNO aswell and is always asking for just one more game (yep, more like 10)
Julia is doing an amazing job raising her own money. I bet you are super proud of her.

Just wanted to know how you like the mop. I got one, but it didn't work very well. The clerk at the store was surprised I returned it and said it must be broken. I am a little apprehensive about trying it again. Do you think it does a good job.

I'm glad to hear John is joining you on the diet. Changing eating habits is so much easier if you have encouragement.

My personal favorite diet is the Fit for Life Diet made famous years ago by Harvey Diamond. He advocates doing a fruit and vegetable diet, similar to the Daniel Fast. Friut must be eaten alone and allowed to fully digest before eating other food groups. The funny part was not mixing food groups we are accustomed to mixing, like meat and cheese. Only vegetables could be combined with another food group and then only one, so I ate vegetable sandwiches, rice and vegetables, or salad topped with chicken or crumbled cheese but not both.

Any diet calls for self control, something often hard to come by in our "microwave" world, and excercise.

I'm glad to hear it is getting warm somewhere in the world. :)

I am not a fan of Atkins or South Beach and that is just a personal feeling. I need a diet where I can eat anywhere, any time. I have lost 91 pounds in the last 9 months. I exercise ALOT. I could never do either Atkins or South Beach and still have the energy to exercise as I do. I just got back from working out on the elliptical machine (I LOVE this machine) for 75 minutes. I just wish my husband would jump on the band wagon with me. I really let myself go trying to conceive both kids with infertility drugs and then through the pregnancy. Good luck! Oh I also attribute my weight loss to sparkpeople.com which is a free website with all kinds of exercise and food logs.

I wish Jonny could come and clean my floors!

Good luck with the diet. Would love to talk to you more about it when I see you. Which btw, what is the March date for Dennis's surgery? I'll get it on my calendar.

That mop looks really great! I may need to check into that!

I've wanted to tell you for a while...I think you have a beautiful family. Yes, you have your hands full, and isn't that such a wonderful blessing?! I have five...so far...and have no idea how many children God has for our family!

Christine I really appreciate you putting pictures and recipes up.

My husband who is only 45, has been having some problems lately. We knew he had to lose some weight, but he also has been having serious enough chest pain and high blood pressure that he is now on meds for it, as well as nitro for the pain.

While we wait for the test results to come back, I have been trying to change our diets. I think I will research the Atkins diet and see what I can do. I like to cook so it wont be laziness that stops me. It will be time if anything, as I work, but I am sure that I can do this for him.

Do you know off hand if Atkins is heart healthy as well as being effective for weight loss?
