Six Months Home

I know you guys can see how well Dennis is doing and how much he has flourished since coming home , but I wanted to share some of the small things that are actually big things to us...... because it is a testimony to how much love, attention, and nourishment can make a difference in a child's life----- and I am hoping and praying that more little ones from Reece's Rainbow will have families commit to them. All of these kids have so much potential---- and time is running out for many of them who will soon be transferred to an institution where their future is very bleak.

This picture of Dennis sleeping in his big boy bed is so significant because he happily lays down in it to go to sleep and doesn't try to get up---- like all of my other kids did at his age. I am continually impressed by what a happy go lucky child he is and I still wonder why God chose us as his parents. Of course, some of you might say that we chose him...... but God laid him on our hearts and I believe with every fiber of my being that God always knew we would be His parents. Whatever the reason...... I am thrilled to be his Mama.

In the last few months, Dennis has learned to do the following things:

* Push his arms through his shirt

* Come and sit down next to me, and lift up his foot when I show him his socks and shoes

* Hurry over to his high chair and try to put on his bib when it is time to eat

* Answer the phone

* Turn off a nightlight

* Come down the stairs

* Sit contentedly on my lap

* Pour a cup of water over his head when it is time to rinse his hair

* Eat a banana

* Throw something away in the trash

* Set off the car alarm when I let him play with my keys

* Climb up on his bed

* Put three blocks together

* Stack blocks on top of each other

* Come and tap my leg when he wants something (he just started doing this a few days ago)

* Take off his socks

* He grumbles and complains in baby talk while holding out his hand when one of his siblings wrongs him in his opinion (this is so cute)

* Shout into his sister Julia's microphone on purpose to try and scare someone

* Take and throw his diapers away

* Ride his push car all over the house by moving his feet back and forth at the same time

* Initiate nose rubs

* Point to where an owie is so I can kiss it

* Shake his head no when he is doesn't want another bite of food

* Push a stool over to a light so that he can turn it on

* Climb his brother's bunk bed

* Point to the radio in the car when he wants to listen to another song

I can't wait to see what our little Dennis is going to show us in the next six months. I'm sure it is going to be big!

This post brings tears to my eyes I admit. I started reading about Dennis from Kimmie at Over The Moon With Joy and instantly fell in love with his story.

And I feel like you do about my kids (who are adopted). God laid them on our hearts and He chose us to be their parents! How blessed we all are!!!

It's obvious to see how much each of your children are loved. Not only Dennis, but the whole gang! And I think that no matter what trials our kids face they will always know how much we wanted them and how loved they are. Not only by us, but by our precious Savior who brought us all together!

Dennis has grown so much in the past six months. Probably new milestones daily. I know how proud I am of him. I can only imagine how proud his mommy and daddy are!

He's is doing so great. Seems like he is really trying to communicate with all his grumbling and leg tapping... I know speech will be a long road. Is he getting speech and language therapy? Have you thought of teaching him to use sign in the meantime? Bright little guy, he would learn quickly.

Those are huge accomplishments. How wonderful to see him come so far.

Wow! What amazing accomplishments...especially setting the car alarm off! Beeping the horn will be tame after that one. :-) Dennis is so blessed to have been given such a loving family. Can't wait to see how he grows and changes in the next 6 months!

What amazing accomplishments for Dennis. He certainly is getting to be a big boy. How old is he? It is amazing how far children can go with just a little love behind them.

Six months from now, you'll be adding to the list and looking back to when he arrived home with John.

Yes, have you written to the orphanage about Dennis?

Love this post! My favorite is "He grumbles and complains in baby talk while holding out his hand when one of his siblings wrongs him in his opinion" I've only seen Dennis in videos you've posted, but I can totally see him doing this. The youngest and teeny-tiniest in the family, yet probably the most powerful (at least in his eyes!). ;)

What a special little guy! Amazing to see how far he's come. Such an inspiration. Thanks for sharing.

Dennis is such a big boy...he has really made so many accomplishments. Thanks for sharing. Plus, he is so cute! I can imagine he gets many kisses!!

I've checked out Reece's Rainbow and love how much this agency advocates for children with special needs.

What a true blessing!!

Happy Six Months Home! Don't forget making hats out of underwear!! He's starting his own trend. :) I believe that God created Dennis to be YOUR child; it is part of The Plan just like all other things in life. Some children just come to us down a different path.

Can't wait to see what else is in store for him and the whole family!

Such a sweet boy! I have also wondered about sign language for him. With an early childhood special ed. background, my strong opinion would be to teach it to him. But I realize I don't know all the factors in this situation. I'm sure it's something you've considered. Your family is so blessed to have him, and he's so blessed to have your family!

Wow. Six months already?? He is doing so well. When we met him last summer, right as he got home, the first thing that struck me about him was you could see how curious and CLEVER he is. He is a smart little guy and it shines through. You may feel blessed to have him - and you are! :-) - but he was blessed to have you too. All that potential will be given the opportunity to bloom.

I think it's so wonderful that Dennis has made so much progress!

Wow - that's a great list! Just wondering, do you use sign language at all with Dennis? I know a few parents over here who do with their kids who are too young to talk. I wasn't sure if that was something that might be encouraged for him given speech might be a difficulty.
