After he was done, I noticed that the paper towels were still clean therefore it would be wasteful to just throw them away, so I cleaned the microwave with them before throwing them away.

How frugal are you???

hey I am the ame if its still can clean then its good to go!!!
I hate waste!!!
not as much as I should be, thanks for the reminder
I suppose I could be more frugal.
my gosh is your house ever clean...
how do you do it:??
I am cheap and I come from cheap stock. My mom catches the cold shower water into a bucket to be used for other things like cleaning, watering plants, etc.
Well I'm with you. I try to use dish towels because I'm constantly washing my hands. It's amazing how many paper towels one family can go through in a week.
I'm a little behind on your blog, I just wanted you to know that I'm keeping Dennis in my prayers for his March surgery.

I also use cloth towels for drying dishes and hands in my kitchen but also use paper towels for anything that needs cleaning up. I have a Dachshund and so lots of paper towels are used for what she leaves behind (if you get the meaning).
You mean you didn't save it to use it for drying up water drips on the kitchen floor and then to dry off a freshly cleaned toilet seat??? Yeah, it takes someone else who is frugal to even go there.
Clark Howard in Atlanta featured a lady as a winner in his money saving contest for saving 50% at the grocery store using buy one get one free deals mostly. That is nothing in my book! Wish I had known about it to enter!!!
You had to ask lol?!?!?! FYI newspaper cleans better than paper towels and leaves no streaks. I use what comes in the mail box.
I get free toothbrushes for the whole family from work(boss tells us to take some home). I turn the heat way down when I leave for work, after all the dogs have fur coats! We do Angel food ministries. I wear kids shoes because they are cheaper(can wear a ladies 8 or kids 7). I could go on and on. I am a BIG Frugal person.
♥ Our big thing is wasting water we don't have a well or city water so we have a cistern and I make everyone (except Joe can't get him to do it) get wet shut the water off and then soap up hair body etc and then turn water on and rinse off QUICK and get out! We keep our thermostate at 65 and I'm huge coupon shopper... today I saved 158 bucks! and only spent 65. I love a good deal. We're all about left overs. I wish I was better about doing dishes by hand and saving water that way but that's one place that I won't go. :)
Frugal, oh yeah--if there's a square or two at the end of the roll of toilet paper, guess who uses it with just a few from the beginning of the new roll? :-) And shampoo or face wash bottles last much longer than when they look empty by putting in a little water and shaking it around!
I'm going to have to check out Shea's idea about kid size shoes!
When I use tin foil to cover something, I will reuse it (the same night) to cover a small portion of the counter while I am cooking so save on clean up time. Or I will reuse the same foil to send hubby's sammie for lunch.
LOL I use the stryofoam egg cartons for paints when the kids use the bulk kids paints.
I use toilet paper rolls to put over un used electrial cords and mark on the tube what it is and what it goes to, no more tangles and I know what it is without really having to look at it.
I'm a baggie washer. I make my daughter bring her ziplock baggies home from her lunch and I wash them (if they're not too disgusting), hang them upside down and reuse them until they get a hole or are too gross. My husband says "They only cost a couple pennies" but it's not so much about the cost, but saving the environment, one baggie at a time:)
I've also been known to reuse dental floss a second day:)
I can't throw away the twist ties from bread bags - I've a whole drawer full of them! And yes, the boys even share bath water! We eat at Lone Star on Saturday's for a special event when kids can eat free on an adult entre - hubby and I share a double chicken breast, the kids don't eat their sides so we do.....family of 5 and we can have a receipt total of just under $13.00, the waitress is always shocked and we leave her a generous tip!
When we were first married I made hubby wash zip lock baggies out and reuse them, as well as pieces of aluminum foil...just like grandma!I had double coupon day today at the store and saved $50!
Ahhh...I miss the rich and frivilous days!
I do most of the things listed. I shop at thrift stores and yard sales. Any one that ones to bless me with a hand me down, I'm more than happy to take, free is best in my book! We do "Navy" showers like "Are you serious", since hubby is retired Navy, we were on well water (but now we have to PAY for it, lol) and have a septic system. We always use left overs and I can get a few meals out of a turkey/chicken, the first meal, a casserole/rice/pasta dish and then a soup, often time sandwiches tossed in for good measure. I add water to the shampoo, conditioner, dishwashing soap and laundry soap when they are getting low, I want to make sure I get every drop out. I do that with sauces and other jarred foods, to make sure I get every drop out, unless it's like mayo or peanutbutter, then I use a spatcula to get it all out. I'm certain I have MANY more areas I need improvement in, thanks for pointing it out, now I'll be more aware!
Christine, You look so beautiful with bangs.
Hugs,
JEB
Instead of paper towels, I usually use rags from the "rag basket". That way I can just throw them in the wash along with a regular load and use them again and again, and again. The rags do double-duty as dog toys. (Gosh, that sounds pathetic - but my dog loves playing with rags.) Unfortunately that usually means there is a rag lying around on the floor in the living room.
I save paper towels for what the dog leaves behind, like Tina, or for grease messes.
Someone mentioned washing dishes by hand to save - I actually read somewhere not long ago that you typically save by using the dishwasher. It uses less water than washing by hand! Isn't that sweet?!!
As for your last post - living in a rural area, closest to small towns, I can't say when the last time is I saw a homeless person. But as others mentioned, we all find a way that works for us to contribute to 'charity'. What I try to always remember to do when I go to the grocery store is to contribute to the food shelf donation. I figure if we would all try remember to donate an item or two even, every time we go grocery shopping, we won't notice it on our grocery bill, but the food shelf would be well stocked. And so many people need to at some time in their lives use the food shelf to get through a tough time. Keep up the kind, giving heart!!
oh I totally would have done the same thing!
I used cloth diapers for child number five but reverted to dispoables when numbers six and seven came along. (I had given the cloth diapers away to a friend with the htought that I was done.) I recall my mom using old worn out washcloths for cleaning dirty baby bottoms. They just went into the diaper pail and she washed them along with the dirty diapers.
We are cheap....let me count the ways....I lather up the dishes and then rinse with water so that the water is not running the whole time. I thought about unplugging everything while i am gone during the day (like a lady I saw on Oprah), but I can't convince my husband on that one. I save his socks with holes to use as rags for cleaning (we slice them down the side so we can tell them apart in the wash). We get free mulch from the city mulch center. We keep the heat at 65 (less if we are not home). We cook dinner and eat leftovers. We put water in our shampoo and soap containers.
Does anyone know how to make soap?
When I started reading this post I thought you were going to say you saved them for later. No big using them a little more. I can't say I'm very frugal but that is probably because my mom is to the extreme. We used to have to go to 3 different food stores to get all the best deals of the week and she would wash and reuse ziploc bags! Guess she was green before it was the thing to do!
LOL! I cringe when my husband washes his hands at the sink and then rips off about six or seven paper towels to dry his hands.
My husband laughs at me because I will cut the end of the toothpaste tube because typically there is enough left for at least two more brushings!
I definitely do the same thing with paper towels!
