As a blogger do you ever feel like you give some of your kids more of the spotlight than others? Not only do I feel that way, but I feel that I often give the kids that are acting up the most blog mention. But not today.
Today, I want to share about William. He is my eight year old boy who finds entertainment in just about anything. Mischievous is a word that comes to mind as I try to describe him to you. I use the word, not in a bad way, but for a lack of a better word, I guess.
Let me explain.
Just the other day he and Andrew were outside playing. One of the neighbors had a small trailer parked in their driveway. William of course, had to go over and look inside it. There was an old bottle sitting inside and he thought it would be fun to take it. He went to a neighbors side yard because they weren't home and he smashed the bottle on the sidewalk next to their trash cans. He immediately cleaned up the glass and cut himself in the process. As he was walking back to our house after his bottle smashing fun fest, I was outside looking for him. Since he can't keep a straight face to save his life, I knew something was up. Poor guy can't keep from telling me the truth either. :)
"William, what's up? Where were you?"
He was very concerned that he was going to be in big trouble so he confessed right away by first telling me how he already cleaned up the bottle.
I checked the cut on his finger which was fine and I gave him a little lecture about staying out of the neighbors yards. But honestly, I wasn't to upset. I am more amused by what makes him tick and how he finds the silliest things to amuse him. See, he thought that smashing this bottle was like the coolest thing he has ever done. That rebel!
I hope he still thinks smashing old bottles is the cool thing to do when he is a teenager. If so, I will gladly supply him and his friends all of my old mayonnaise jars so they can spend the afternoon smashing them on the side of our house. :)

Honor has that streak. Brian is more 'study and observe' - logic it out. Honor will go get the hammer. She wants to know, so stand back - she's going to find out. I love that tendency! - destructive as it may be. We do try to convince her that she needs to get an adult involved FIRST though, we'll support her, and not after trouble has already happened ;-D
You are such a good mom to not make a big deal out of things like that.
Yeah, it would seem sometimes boys just have to have their destructive moments. A year or so ago, when around ten years old, my son Seth found a number of old computer keyboards on the garbage piles out the front of a neighbour's house, left for rubbish collection. He grabbed them all and asked if they were really garbage. When I reassured him of that he took a hammer to them and just smashed them into bits with such joy. Didn't do the greatest job cleaning up, but the look of satisfaction on his face when he told me that was the best fun ever was priceless, so I finished the cleaning up job for him.
Yesterday I let Hope, my 3 yr. old have a dinner knife and poke holes in this big empty computer box in my husband's office. I reasoned that it was keeping her quiet and entertained while I was on the phone and it couldn't hurt anything. What I didn't know was that my husband had put the computer monitor back in the box yesterday to take to a demo meeting in the afternoon. The screen was facing the top of the box. He came home to get his computer and took it to a demo meeting in the afternoon, and lo and behold, the knife fell out of the box and there were scratches all over the screen. OOOPS! One of the guys asked, "Do you LET your kids do things like that?!" Apparently, yes, we do.
You have a beautiful family!
I bet Maxim was smashing bottles at his age! (Just a warning!)
I also found that my children seem to have a natural desire to confess. That seems so good. I remember Aidan once did something and when I got home he literally ran into my arms to tell me what he'd done.
It's nice when they are so honest, isn't it? Makes you proud. :)
Alex is a big glass breaker! I've lost so many mugs, juice glasses and even a tealight lantern. What we came up with was that if he wanted to smash things, HE has to use his own allowance and I will gladly take him to the thrift store. We remodeled our house and DH took him to the dumpster (my husband is a builder, seems we always have a dumpster somewhere) and let him have at a cracked sliding glass door. Talk about Nirvana!
Christine, I was kidding on Annie's blog about you homeschooling my son. We live in Texas, the commute would be pretty tough! But how sweet of you to respond.
♥ AND he cleaned it up! THat the best kind of rebel! :)
Charissa, that is too funny!
