Last night, I was reading a Strawberry Shortcake book to the girls. One of the characters in the book, I think Angel Cake, needed to borrow some butter. She was presented a stick of butter in a beautiful covered butter dish, and the girls thought that was just so special.
"Why don't you have a pretty butter dish Mama?" asked Annalyn.
"Yeah, Mom, why don't you put your butter in something pretty?" Sveta chimed in.
"Girls, I put the butter on a plate because it is easier to get from a plate instead of a little square dish. Plus, we use the butter so fast that it doesn't need to be covered."
Real translation. Mom is too lazy to add an extra step (removing the cover each time) in her food preparation.
"But I do have one that I can show you," I told them.
"Oh yeah!"
"We want to see it Mama!" Sveta, Annalyn, and Anna squealed.
"Will you use it one time too?" Anna asked with much excitement.
"Sure I'll use it pretty soon."
To have such excitement over something so trivial still marvels me. Kind of like when I get a new kind of hand soap out. They go crazy, and think I am the best mom ever.

We have a couple different butter dishes, our favorite is an old square refridgerator dish, it's not too big of a hassle to use it, and it holds about 2 sticks worth of butter (we buy a big 2lb log of butter so I'm guessing it's about 2 sticks). The kids (particularly the boys) have some sort of affinity for the ritual of making toast and tea (afternoon snack) and using the butter dish, they've tried to convince me we need a similar jam/jelly dish, but I'm not sold on that just yet... isn't that weird? but somehow cute too :)
Butter dishes? What are butter dishes? We use the big economy tubs. If you look closely, I'm sure you'll find a few toast crumbs added in for flavor.
I just LOVE it when kids get a huge kick out of the simplest things. It's such a sweet reminder that the small things count in a big way... even butter dishes and new soap! I have new shower gel and that has made my week.
You ARE the best mom ever!
I have a butter dish I use when I need to use a cube of butter. Mostly we buy the tub of whipped butter and it just sits on the counter!
I so much wanted an antique butter dish as a wedding present, and was dismayed I didn't get one. Someone gave us money, and I tramped all over all the antique districts I could find, and for some odd reason at that time nary a butter dish could I find. However, a few years ago I wandered into an estate sale - and there was my butter dish! A really pretty cut glass one. We used it for years. Let's just say Aidan and Lydia were very calm, very careful children. I can't QUITE say that about my present crew.
I was about 9 years old in about 1976, and I wanted to buy my mother a mother's day gift. I was at a department store called "Big N". I picked out a covered butter dish. It had little blue flowers on the top. I was so pleased with the gift. A few months later, I was carrying it across the kitchen to put it away. I must have tipped it because the cover slid off and onto the floor. It broke. How I cried and cried. My mom said it was ok and that she still liked the bottem of it. I think we used the dish for years-just the bottem.
Hmmm... I may have to try this here and see if they get excited! LOL
My butter dish looks exactly like yours, well, most of the time. I do have the bottom of an old butter dish but can't recall if I ever owned the cover. Years back I had a covered butter dish but somebody inevitably got "butter fingers" and dropped it.
A pretty covered butter dish would be very nice to have for special occasions.
