Inside of a bowling ball

Yes, this is a cracked bowling ball.

Before I say anything else, I want to apologize to whomever may have given it to John (I'm thinking Mom and Dad) for breaking a perfectly good bowling ball. Well, I didn't break it, but when John gave the kids the green light to go ahead and do whatever they wanted with the ball, I didn't resist.

He wanted to get rid of it anyways. It was either give it to Good Will or let our kids spend a good solid hour trying to break it. They bowled in the street, they had a shot-put event, took a hammer to it I think, and eventually broke it.

I'm sure I heard Anna say that this was the best day ever!

Technically, this was also an educational experiment, because none of us even knew what the inside of a bowling ball looked like until today. This may even count as a public service to all of you reading. I bet you didn't know what the inside of a bowling ball looked like. Plus, it was interesting to learn just how solid and durable one of these things are. The kids must have thrown it up in the air to let it drop, a gazillion times. Kind of like seeing how may licks it takes to get to the center of a tootsie pop. How many drops on the pavement does it take to break a bowling ball?

Very educational. :)

I still feel bad for ruining a perfectly good bowling ball that someone else could have used. Kind of wasteful I admit.

On another note, How do you like the new look of my blog? Just trying to make it look as hip and cool as all of yours. :) I especially love the wide three column look with the big picture headers, but it ain't gonna happen any time soon. As it is, I spent way too much time editing the HTML code to make these changes, and I still didn't get it the way I want. Oh well, I guess it will be a work in progress.

John and Matt were given the ball by the bowling alley when they joined a kid's league. Matt's was red. At least that's how I remember it.

That sounds like something me and my sister would like to do sometime. It must of been hard even with a hammer to crack it.

I never had any idea what was in a bowling ball!!

someone said that inside a golf ball there are 1000s of rubber bands maybe you could try that one next?

How fun! We did the same thing with pumpkins. I'm sure yours was MUCH easier to clean up than ours, but we had fun nonetheless. :)

Hi Matt. Good you hear from you!

Chelley - yes, inside a golf ball is miles of wound rubber bands (be careful cutting though - the balls are hard and darn slippery. At the center is a little rubber ball. My dad golfed and let us experiment. Mom NEVER let us touch her bowling ball though!

My Dad was a handyman, mechanic, electrician, carpenter, etc - he always collected old things and scavenged them for parts. I spent many a weekend helping take things apart. I loved helping my Dad, and while I am not a mechanic, I grew up unafraid of using tools or tackling messy jobs. And I still have the curiousity - what's on the inside...??

Christine - I LOVE the big picture of all the kids!!! Can't wait to show it to their cousins after school today. :-)

Could you give a run-down on the names and ages of the kids in photo at top. It's an awesome picture! Also, which ons are home-grown and which ones are not? What a beautiful family!!!

I love the picture header!

I can't tell you how much time I wasted trying to figure out how to edit my template to make it three column. My sis tried to get me to help her do the same and I had to say, um, NO.

I am SOOOOOO disappointed! I thought they were that lovely marble all the way through!

I like the new blog look! Only I wish there was a way you could "label" all the kids; I think I know them all now, but reminders help! :)

I am glad to know others have to struggle to get their blog looking right. I almost didn't start because I had to feel "good" about the aesthetics and it was HARD!

By the way....it isn't (or doesn't look right) to me anymore... There has been "slippage" so my artwork and the line under it argue. What's that about? Tell me anyone who might know.

I love the new blog look too!

I'm sure the kids will remember this fun episode smashing a bowling ball for years to come.

I saw how they were made on "Modern Marvels" or something like that and it was really interesting!

Sam & I just love smashing rocks to get the crystal or "shiny parts" out. Put on hard hats, goggles, gloves, & long sleeves, get out a hammer, and SMASH! Of course Sam is only allowed to watch until he's a bit more coordinated, though!
